Picture naming yields highly consistent cortical activation patterns: test-retest reliability of magnetoencephalography recordings

2020

AbstractReliable paradigms and imaging measures of individual-level brain activity are paramount when reaching from group-level research studies to clinical assessment of individual patients. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) provides a direct, non-invasive measure of cortical processing with high spatiotemporal accuracy, and is thus well suited for assessment of functional brain damage in patients with language difficulties. This MEG study aimed to identify, in a picture naming paradigm, source-localized evoked activity and modulations of cortical oscillations that show high test-retest reliability across measurement days in healthy individuals, demonstrating their applicability in clinical set…

Both daily demands as well as training and competition characteristics in sports can result in a psychobiological state of mental fatigue leading to feelings of tiredness, lack of energy, an increased perception of effort, and performance decrements. Moreover, optimal performance will only be achievable if the balance between recovery and stress states is re-established. Consequently, recovery strategies are needed aiming at mental aspects of recovery. The aim of the study was to examine acute effects of potential mental recovery strategies (MR) on subjective-psychological and on cognitive performance outcomes after a mentally fatiguing task. A laboratory-based randomized cross-over study w…

MindBEAGLE — A new system for the assessment and communication with patients with disorders of consciousness and complete locked-in syndrom

2017

Patients with disorders of consciousness (DOC) cannot reply to questions or clinical assessments using voluntary motor control, and therefore it is very difficult to assess their cognitive capabilities and conscious awareness. Patients who are locked-in (LIS) are instead fully conscious, and they can communicate with their preserved eye movements. However, when the residual oculomotor activity is also lost (e.g., patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis disease of very long duration), the locked-in status becomes complete (CLIS). In CLIS patients, detection of conscious awareness may become very challenging, similarly to the subjects with DOC. mindBEAGLE has a physiological testing batte…

Zonal Segmentation of Prostate T2W-MRI using Atrous Convolutional Neural Network

2019

The number of prostate cancer cases is steadily increasing especially with rising number of ageing population. It is reported that 5-year relative survival rate for man with stage 1 prostate cancer is almost 99% hence, early detection will significantly improve treatment planning and increase survival rate. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique is a common imaging modality for diagnosis of prostate cancer. MRI provide good visualization of soft tissue and enable better lesion detection and staging of prostate cancer. The main challenge of prostate whole gland segmentation is due to blurry boundary of central gland (CG) and peripheral zone (PZ) which lead to differential diagnosis. Sinc…

Focal liver lesions hyperintense on T1-weighted magnetic resonance images.

2009

This article reviews focal liver lesions hyperintense on T1-weighted magnetic resonance (MR) images and describes the underlying etiologies associated with their T1 signal intensity. Although focal liver lesions are commonly detected because of their iso- or hypointensity on T1-weighted images, lesions (benign or malignant) may present with T1 hyperintensity when they contain T1 shortening elements--such as fat, hemorrhage, copper, melanin, and highly concentrated proteins. Our discussion includes the description of state-of-the-art T1-weighted MR sequences and the imaging features of lesions on pre- and postcontrast MR images that are characteristic for lesion composition and useful for ma…

Differentiation between brain metastases and glioblastoma multiforme based on MRI, MRS and MRSI

2009

Brain metastases and glioblastoma multiforme are the most aggressive and common brain tumours in adults and they require a different clinical management. Anatomical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or clinical history, cannot always clearly distinguish between them. This study describes and verifies the use of magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) and magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) in combination with MRI for differential diagnosis of glioblastomas and metastases. Feature selection methods are applied to the magnetic resonance (MR) spectra of 121 patients and relevant features are detected. Different classification methods are used to distinguish glioblastoma multiforme and…

Endometrial receptivity: evaluation with ultrasound.

2013

An adequate endometrial receptivity is a crucial factor for embryo implantation. We describe endometrial morphology (endometrial appearance or pattern, endometrial thickness, volume, and delimitation), based on the concepts and possibilities of the new ultrasound modalities (3-dimensional/4-dimensional ultrasound, automatic volume calculation, virtual organ computer-aided analysis, tomographic ultrasound image, inverse mode, and 3-dimensional Doppler angiography) as markers of endometrial receptivity.

Quantitative Musculoskeletal Ultrasound

2020

AbstractUltrasound (US) imaging plays a crucial role in the assessment of musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders. Several quantitative tools are offered by US systems and add information to conventional US imaging. This article reviews the quantitative US imaging tools currently available in MSK radiology, specifically focusing on the evaluation of elasticity with shear-wave elastography, perfusion with contrast-enhanced US and noncontrast superb microvascular imaging, and bone and muscle mass with quantitative US methods. Some of them are well established and already of clinical value, such as elasticity and contrast-enhanced perfusion assessment in muscles and tendons. MSK radiologists should be…
