Quantifying unpredictability: A multiple-model approach based on satellite imagery data from Mediterranean ponds.
2017
Fluctuations in environmental parameters are increasingly being recognized as essential features of any habitat. The quantification of whether environmental fluctuations are prevalently predictable or unpredictable is remarkably relevant to understanding the evolutionary responses of organisms. However, when characterizing the relevant features of natural habitats, ecologists typically face two problems: (1) gathering long-term data and (2) handling the hard-won data. This paper takes advantage of the free access to long-term recordings of remote sensing data (27 years, Landsat TM/ETM+) to assess a set of environmental models for estimating environmental predictability. The case study inclu…
Invariant Feature Matching for Image Registration Application Based on New Dissimilarity of Spatial Features
2016
An invariant feature matching method is proposed as a spatially invariant feature matching approach. Deformation effects, such as affine and homography, change the local information within the image and can result in ambiguous local information pertaining to image points. New method based on dissimilarity values, which measures the dissimilarity of the features through the path based on Eigenvector properties, is proposed. Evidence shows that existing matching techniques using similarity metrics--such as normalized cross-correlation, squared sum of intensity differences and correlation coefficient--are insufficient for achieving adequate results under different image deformations. Thus, new…
Quantifying Irrigated Winter Wheat LAI in Argentina Using Multiple Sentinel-1 Incidence Angles
2022
Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data provides an appealing opportunity for all-weather day or night Earth surface monitoring. The European constellation Sentinel-1 (S1) consisting of S1-A and S1-B satellites offers a suitable revisit time and spatial resolution for the observation of croplands from space. The C-band radar backscatter is sensitive to vegetation structure changes and phenology as well as soil moisture and roughness. It also varies depending on the local incidence angle (LIA) of the SAR acquisition’s geometry. The LIA backscatter dependency could therefore be exploited to improve the retrieval of the crop biophysical variables. The availability of S1 radar time-series data at d…
Development of the Mental Imagery Scale for Preschool Children using Classical Test Theory and Item Response Theory
2020
This study aimed to develop a measure of mental imagery evaluation in preschool children. Three studies were conducted: Study 1 focused on the exploration of the factorial structure, reliability, and Item Response Theory (IRT) discrimination on a sample of children from 4 to 5 years old (N = 100; 50% males and 50% females); Study 2 focused on the confirmation of results about dimensionality on a sample of children from 4 to 7 years old (N = 170; 50% males and 50% females); and Study 3 focused on verifying criterion validity on a sample of children from 4 to 5 years old (N = 70; 47.1% males and 52.9% females). The results confirmed the hypothesis of three reliable factors underlying the scal…
La collezione Scilla presso il Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences: pratiche di visualizzazione dal XVII al XXI secolo
2015
The paleontological collection of Agostino Scilla (1629-1700), now kept at the Sedgwick Museum in Cambridge, has been visually represented since 1670, year of publication of Scilla’s treaty La vana speculazione disingannata dal senso. The plates of the treaty have been repeatedly used in scientific literature, in comparison with the specimens of the collection and, more often, with other visualization techniques. The contentious taxonomic identification of one of those specimens, the olotype of Squalodon melitensis, shows how the legitimization of images was at the core of scientific debate. According to Daston & Galison, scientific images are epistemic objects related with specific epistem…
Dopo la cena, allo stesso modo. Dieci anni di immaginario gastronomico
2019
The use of vineyard spectral signatures to identify table grape cultivars
2021
Vineyards have characteristic responses to sunlight. The reflectance values at the different wavelengths are typical of vegetation and define its spectral signature. The aim of this work was to determine the spectral signatures of table grape vineyards located in the production area of Robinvale (Victoria, Australia) in order to identify cultivars in the vineyard. Spectral signatures were detected from images in eight bands from the Worldview 3 platform. Spectral signatures for a representative number of plots were extracted using satellite reflectance images for each cultivar. Spectral signatures were also collected in the field, from the same cultivars, with a FieldSpec® HandHeld 2 portab…
Indoor spectroradiometric characterization of plastic litters commonly polluting the Mediterranean Sea: toward the application of multispectral image…
2020
AbstractAround 350 million tonnes of plastics are annually produced worldwide. A remarkable percentage of these products is dispersed in the environment, finally reaching and dispersed in the marine environment. Recent field surveys detected microplastics’ concentrations in the Mediterranean Sea. The most commonly polymers found were polyethylene, polypropylene and viscose, ethylene vinyl acetate and polystyrene. In general, the in-situ monitoring of microplastic pollution is difficult and time consuming. The main goals of this work were to spectrally characterize the most commonly polymers and to quantify their spectral separability that may allow to determine optimal band combinations for…
Eidetics
2020
The term eidetics denotes the domain of eidetic imagery and its study. The standard phenomenon of eidetic imagery consists in seeing a stimulus that is no longer present, when the experimenter is allowed to infer from subjects’ reports or experimental protocols that “seeing” is different from remembering or experiencing an after-image. After a prolonged period from mid-1930 to about 1960 in which the interest in this phenomenon had died out, research was resumed on the grounds of findings which seemed to point at the ability of extracting information from no longer present stimuli, which showed to be different from sensory and recognition memory. The functional role of eidetic imagery in co…
Visualization/Visibility
2020
The term visualization is employed to refer to the capacity of making visible properties, relations, objects and state of affairs which either are no longer presented through perception or depends upon concepts and theoretical definitions, which regard domains that lie outside the scope of perception. In the strict sense, visualization is the kind of experience akin to perception, which is enabled by the structure and the function of imagery. From a functional standpoint, then, the capacity of visualization relies on a not arbitrary mapping between visual-spatial representations and what they stand for. In this broader sense, it is connected with perception and rule-based qualitative reason…
