The economic crisis in an industrial district and its effects on the migration flows
2013
Life in a nutshell: evolution of a migratory metaphor in Spanish cartoons
2014
This article studies the image of the boat immigrants use to cross the Strait of Gibraltar, which separates Europe and Africa, through the analysis of 125 cartoons published in Spanish press between 2006 and 2012. Our study shows that in this span of seven years – which coincides with a period of growth for Spanish economy and the subsequent crisis – there was an interesting and meaningful conceptual evolution regarding the image of the immigrant boat. This situation resulted in argumentatively effective visual analogies, metaphors and metonymies which evolved all along this period, making this boat a cultural symbol of our time. The article also intends to highlight the importance of cart…
Impact of the refugee crisis in the EU CSDP. Reference to the Spanish contribution
2015
For the last three years the EU has been facing a refugee crisis which adds on to the flux of immigrants heading to Europe. The absence of safe and legal routes results in both immigrants and refugees having to recur to traffic mafias in order to cross the Mediterranean (through two main routes, the central one from Libya and the eastern one from Turkey), which ends up turning into a pit for thousands of deaths. The EU has launched a dispositive to fight against this situation, specifically in the route that stems from Libya, the operation EUNAVFOR MED. However, its features raise a series of problems which the Security Council’s Resolution 2240 (2015) has yet to resolve.
The socio-ecology of zoonotic infections
2011
The resurgence of infectious diseases of zoonotic origin observed in recent years imposes a major morbidity/mortality burden worldwide, and also a major economic burden that extends beyond pure medical costs. The resurgence and epidemiology of zoonoses are complex and dynamic, being influenced by varying parameters that can roughly be categorized as human-related, pathogen-related, and climate/environment-related; however, there is significant interplay between these factors. Human-related factors include modern life trends such as ecotourism, increased exposure through hunting or pet owning, and culinary habits, industrialization sequelae such as farming/food chain intensification, globali…
Religion and the Scandinavian Welfare State: Public Support for Socio-economic Rights in Times of Migration
2020
The theme of this article is the legitimisation of social and economic rights within the context of the Scandinavian welfare state. This problem has become more prominent in the light of the recent influx of immigrants from countries in the Middle East and Africa dominated by other religious and cultural traditions than Lutheran Protestantism. Two questions are discussed in the article. First, what role has religion played vis-a-vis the development of the welfare states in Scandinavia? Second, in what ways have recent immigration trends influenced popular support for welfare provision and social rights?
The migrant crisis in the Mediterranean Sea: Empirical evidence on policy interventions
2021
Abstract This paper presents a novel set of empirical evidence to explore several hypotheses regarding the migrant crisis in the Mediterranean Sea. The political instability in transit countries, such as Libya, that made pre-existent repatriation policies ineffective, called for several search-and-rescue operations in the Mediterranean, which in turn have been wrongly accused of fostering illegal immigration and increasing deaths at sea. The empirical results show that the main determinants of the departures are several root causes at the departing African countries, underlining the importance of fighting human smuggling networks. The paper suggests a change in migration studies’ perspectiv…
The essay analyses the recent Italian constitutional court ruling (no. 19/2022), that deems constitutional social security law, which subordinates the granting of minimum income guaranteed to the ownership of permanent residence permit for non-EU citizens.
Peer ethnicity and achievement: a meta-analysis into the compositional effect
2010
This study reports a meta-analysis on the effects of ethnic minority share in school on achievement test scores. Best evidence from the studies that have appeared thus far on this topic shows that these compositional effects appear small in general, but may be larger when the ethnic minority group is African Americans in the USA, than when the minority group consists of immigrants. A high share of students from an ethnic minority group seems to affect the achievement from students belonging to the same ethnic group more, than the achievement of students belonging to the ethnic majority or to other ethnic minority groups. Effects of the share of immigrants on test scores of ethnic majority s…
2021
