Intercultural Relations in Italy
2017
In culturally diverse societies, one of the biggest questions on our minds is 'how shall we all live together?' The chapter offers an answer to this fundamental and topical issue. By exploring intercultural relationships between dominant/national and non-dominant/ethnic populations in Italy, the authors analyse 'general' principles of intercultural relations and guidelines for social inclusion.

L’influenza degli atteggiamenti verso l’acculturazione sull’adattamento psicosociale di immigrati adolescenti in Sicilia.
2009
The outcomes of the integration process of immigrant youth are affected by two dimensions, namely “acculturation attitudes”: the attitude towards the maintenance of the heritage culture (cultural maintenance) and the attitude towards the contact with the host culture (cultural contact). Cultural maintenance and cultural contact affect the psychosocial adjustment of immigrant youth either directly and indirectly, through the mediator action of other variables, such as intergroup attitudes. The study was aimed at analyzing the relations between acculturation attitudes and psychosocial adjustment among Tunisian adolescents living in Sicily. Particularly, the aims of the study were twofold: (a)…

Liberalizing Immigration Policies for the UK Agricultural Sector in the Post-Brexit Era
2022
We investigate the effects of immigration policies on the UK agricultural sector under the new post-Brexit deal through a computable general equilibrium framework. We consider bilateral flows of migrants and frictions as part of capital and labor mobility to compare the point-based immigration system to open immigration policies in terms of their impacts on agriculture. We also integrate the GTAP-GMig2 immigration model with the GTAP-AGR agriculture model. Our findings show that liberal immigration policies have positive effects on production, farmers’ income, and overall welfare. The benefits increase if these policies are combined with reduced bureaucracy and lower behind-the-border costs…
“Doing Family” and Religious Belonging of Immigrants. Case Studies in South Italy
2023
The immigration and integration policies reveal the difficulty of the host society to institutionalize new models of social differences accompanying integration process. What happens when people of different cultures, values, religion live together? Immigrants who “arrive” continue their life in a place where they do not passively participate over time but become actors. Pressed by the hegemonic culture of the host society, immigrants do not cease to practice their religious and origin cultural expressions. Considering the impact of religion and origin cul¬tural values on public and private expression of differences, it is important to consider their role (between persistence and innovation…

Large-scale effects of migration and conflict in pre-agricultural groups: Insights from a dynamic model.
2016
The debate on the causes of conflict in human societies has deep roots. In particular, the extent of conflict in hunter-gatherer groups remains unclear. Some authors suggest that large-scale violence only arose with the spreading of agriculture and the building of complex societies. To shed light on this issue, we developed a model based on operatorial techniques simulating population-resource dynamics within a two-dimensional lattice, with humans and natural resources interacting in each cell of the lattice. The model outcomes under different conditions were compared with recently available demographic data for prehistoric South America. Only under conditions that include migration among c…
