Determinants of Immigration in Europe. The Relevance of Life Expectancy and Environmental Sustainability

2017

This research analyzes the main variables that determine immigration in Europe and includes aspects related to the economy, population, healthcare, and environmental sustainability. The empirical analysis consists of two sets of data: one made up of all EU member states (EU-28) and the other containing countries that form a part of the Eurozone (EU-19), using the Generalized Method of Moments. The sample covers the period between 2000 and 2014, and the data are analyzed separately and comparatively in the most relevant stages during that time (economic prosperity, crisis, and recovery). The most notable results indicate that the variables related to GDP and public debt largely serve to just…

Neighborhood Characteristics, Alcohol Outlet Density, and Alcohol-Related Calls-for-Service: A Spatiotemporal Analysis in a Wet Drinking Country

2017

Alcohol outlets have been associated with different social problems, such as crime, violence, intimate partner violence, and child maltreatment. The spatial analysis of neighborhood availability of alcohol outlets is key for better understanding of these influences. Most studies on the spatial distribution of alcohol outlets in the community have been conducted in U.S. cities, but few studies have assessed this spatial distribution in other countries where the drinking culture may differ. The aim of this study was to analyze the spatiotemporal distribution of alcohol outlets in the city of Valencia, Spain, and its relationship with neighborhood-level characteristics, as well as to examine t…

2015

With the passing of the la Ley Organica de Mejora de la Calidad Educativa [Reform Act of Improvement of Quality in Education] reemerges one of the timeliest educational issues: decision-making in the field of educational policy that takes care of immigrant students. The present moment is an excellent excuse for, from the perspective that Comparative Education offers, the revision of how the collective of immigrant children has been educated through three models of educational management represented by three Autonomous Communities: Valencia, Catalonia and Andalusia. The article focuses on the analysis of the measures taken in these three cases concerning the reception, the welcoming, and the…

Urban Mobility, Social Inclusion and Participation: A Qualitative Study in Palermo, Italy

2020

The purpose of this chapter is to discuss the connection between social inclusion and urban mobility, focusing on the role of sharing mobility and to what extent it might be a favourable tool for social inclusion, particularly for disadvantaged groups such as migrants. To our knowledge, whilst the literature has already examined the associations between migrants’ social inclusion and mobility, the role of sharing mobility in this process has not yet been widely analysed, especially in the Italian context. Hence, the present chapter addresses this knowledge gap. The rest of the chapter is organised as follows. First, we describe the relationships between mobility and social exclusion, then w…

Iniuria Migrandi: Criminalization of Immigrants and the Basic Principles of the Criminal Law

2013

Ethnic prejudice, resilience, and perception of inclusion of immigrant pupils among Italian and Catalan teachers

2021

In the current study we investigated the relationship between ethnic prejudice and resilience and the perception of inclusion of immigrant students among primary and middle school teachers in two different countries (Italy and Spain). Participants were 315 teachers: 75 Catalan women, 25 Catalan men, 202 Italian women, and 13 Italian men. Participants completed the Classical and Modern Racial Prejudice Scale, the Resilience Process Questionnaire, and an ad hoc questionnaire evaluating teachers’ perceptions about immigrant students and their inclusive education process. The results showed two different models: The first one, referring to Italian teachers, suggested that the resilience compone…

Religion and Culture of Origin. Re-Shaping Identity in the Integration Process: A Case Study in Sicily

2019

What happens when people of different cultures, values, religion live together? Sociological studies on immigrative phenomenon often swing between immigration and integration policies. These policies actually reveal the dif…

Family reunification: the case of the Muslim migrant children in Europe

2014

Adopting a child is not a legal concept recognized in Islamic law, which, while giving great importance to orphans and children’s rights, has introduced the legal institution of the Kafala. This institution can be defined as a commitment by the kafil to ensure maintenance, education and protection of a minor makfoul until his legal majority, in the same way as would a father to his son, but without creating any family relationship. For these reasons the Kafala cannot be compared to an international adoption, which, contrariwise, entails the creation of a parent-child relationship. On one side the Kafala is a legal concept recognized by International Law, in particular by the United Nations …
