Analiza wybranych aspektów procesów migracyjnych na rynek pracy w Polsce
2018
Emigrowali głównie ludzie młodzi i stosunkowo dobrze wykształceni.
Further development of integrated threat theory and intergroup contact: a reply to Aberson (2015)
2016
ABSTRACTThis essay furthers a dialogue about the theoretical and statistical merits of Croucher's [(2013). Integrated threat theory and acceptance of immigrant assimilation: An analysis of Muslim immigration in Western Europe. Communication Monographs, 80, 46–62] study exploring the relationships between threat from an immigrant group, belief that an immigrant wants to assimilate, and intergroup contact. Key points of divergence include assertions that (a) the relationships in the original piece are counter to previous literature/relationships, (b) the correlations presented are implausible, (c) the magnitude of the relationships is too strong, and (d) the manuscript has “odd” multiple regr…
Russian-speaking immigrant teachers in Finnish classrooms : Views and lived experiences in Finnish education
2017
Success of integration depends, amongst other things, on immigrants’ involvement in the host country’s education. Educational differences between home and host countries can either promote or hinder academic progress of immigrants and, consequently, overall process of their integration. The goal of this study is to investigate what effect differences between educational systems of Finland and neighbouring Russia may have on professional induction of Russian-speaking immigrant teachers in Finland. This is done through researching experiences of Russian-speaking teachers in Finnish education. Their views and interpretations of their own eligibility and Finnish schooling practices lay foundati…
The early careers of the second generations: a double ethnic penalty?
2016
International audience; Young people from North African origin have greater difficulty in finding employment than their counterparts of French origin. And once they do manage to find employment, their jobs tend to be of lower quality. Thus they appear to suffer from a double penalty linked to their origins which, aggravated by the crisis, does not seem to abate over time.
Age and Acculturation: The Host Language Proficiency of Immigrants in Finland
2010
Tämän proseminaarityön tarkoituksena oli tutkia, miten maahanmuuttajan akkulturaation taso ja maahanmuuton aikainen ikä vaikuttavat saavutettuun suomen kielen osaamistasoon. Lisäksi tutkimuksen avulla yritettiin löytää mahdollisia eroja pakolaisten ja vapaaehtoisten maahanmuuttajien suomen kielen oppimiseen vaikuttavien asioiden välillä. Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli täydentää aikaisempaa tutkimusta maahanmuuttajien isäntäkielen oppimisesta, koska aiempi tutkimus on keskittynyt lähes ainoastaan maihin, joiden pääkielenä käytetään englantia. Viitekehyksenä käytettiin lähinnä kahta eri tutkimusta, joista toisessa käytetty kyselylomake toimi myös tämän tutkimuksen kysymyslomakkeen pohjana. L…

Attitudes : Tendencies and Variations
2018
This chapter presents an overview of religiosity and attitudes to religious diversity in media and other public spaces based on a cross-Scandinavian survey conducted in 2015. Although Scandinavians in general have a weak personal connection to religion, Christianity still holds a privileged position as an expression of cultural identity. Scandinavians express support for equal rights to practice religion, but also doubtfulness towards public expressions of religion. More than one-fourth of respondents discuss news about religion and religious extremism regularly. There is a widespread sentiment that Islam is a threat to the national culture, even though most respondents state that they oppo…
Adapting to a Finnish workplace : case : occupational immigration of Chinese metal workers.
2009
The aim of the study was to investigate intercultural adaptation of occupational immigrants to Finnish working life and culture and identify factors that support or hinder the adaptation process. Due to demographic changes in the society and the increasing number of foreigners in Finnish workplaces, the study of occupational immigration is a very contemporary topic. The study was qualitative in nature. 13 Chinese metal workers were interviewed in small groups using a translator in Mandarin Chinese. The respondents had arrived in Finland at different times between 6 and 16 months prior to the interview. The research was conducted with the help of Mänttä Regional Vocational Education Centre w…
Successful adaptation of immigrants to Finland : can cultural fusion work?
2017
Immigration numbers in Finland are growing, more than doubling in the past decade, with immigrants arriving from increasingly diverse regions of the world. An attempt should be made to understand what are the factors that lead immigrants to finding happiness, and to mitigate the apparent rise in assimilation and anti-immigrant attitude in Finland. Most of the interviewees (n=16; 7 females, 9 males) have embedded themselves in dispersed communities, with connections from the workplace, studies, or common interests (e.g., religion, hobbies) that rarely including their immediate neighbors. Several reported a comfort in their own uniqueness. Some pointed to the kindness of Finns as integral to …
Witnessing the experience of European bordering: Watching the documentaryUnder den samme himmelin an immigration detention centre
2017
This article draws on theories of bordering and mediated witnessing to examine a documentary film that mediates migrants’ experiences of bordering in Europe. My analysis of Under den samme himmel/Days of Hope shows how the film captures the multiplicity of bordering practices, from geographical to socio-cultural borderings. The analysis is informed by watching and discussing the film in an immigrant detention facility in Finland with people who experienced and eye-witnessed experiences similar to those depicted in the film. This creates a sense of co-presence of the experiential landscapes in the border zones, and the film invites viewers to consider borders not as lines in the landscape, b…
