Prehistoric Settlement and Population in the Madonie Mountains. New Data from the Archaeological Survey

2010

The aim of the Madonie research project is to analyse mobility strategies and the use of a mountainous territory by relating geomorphologic features, raw material sources and landscape to the prehistoric settlement. For this purpose we planned an intensive and systematic survey of sample areas, selected on geo-morphological, altimetric and archaeological criteria, correlated to a palaeoenvironmental investigation based on the study of palynological sequence samples coming from wet areas of the Madonie territory and from archaeological deposits. Le projet de recherche sur la Madonie analyse les stratégies de mobilité et l’exploitation du territoire de montagne, en reliant les caractéristique…

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE MAXILLARY CANINES IN AN ECTOPIC AND VARIATION OF THE DIAMETER OF THE TEETH

2014

Aim. A tooth is impacted when its apex is formed but does not erupt as expected during the physiological timeframe of eruption. Maxillary canines, after the third molars are the teeth that more frequently show alterations of their eruptive process.. Maxillary canines can be positioned in ectopic palatal or buccal position. In recent years, an extensive search of the literature has shown a correlation between the palatal ectopic eruption of the canine and size of the dental elements reduced. Purpose of the study was to investigate a relationship between ectopic eruption of the canine oral, dental crowding and increased diameter of the teeth.

The effects of using participatory working time scheduling software on working hour characteristics and wellbeing : a quasi-experimental study of irr…

2020

Background: Studies in the health care sector indicate that good work time control is associated with better perceived wellbeing but also with non-ergonomic work schedules, such as compressed work schedules. Participatory working time scheduling is a collaborative approach to scheduling shift work. Currently, there is a lack of information on whether working hour characteristics and employees' wellbeing in irregular shift work change after implementing participatory working time scheduling. Objective: To investigate the effects of using digital participatory working time scheduling software on working hour characteristics and well-being among Finnish hospital employees. Participants and met…

Influence of custom-made and prefabricated insoles before and after an intense run

2017

[EN] Each time the foot contacts the ground during running there is a rapid deceleration that results in a shock wave that is transmitted from the foot to the head. The fatigue of the musculoskeletal system during running may decrease the ability of the body to absorb those shock waves and increase the risk of injury. Insoles are commonly prescribed to prevent injuries, and both custom-made and prefabricated insoles have been observed to reduce shock accelerations during running. However, no study to date has included a direct comparison of their behaviour measured over the same group of athletes, and therefore great controversy still exists regarding their effectiveness in reducing impact …

Educational Impact Evaluation of Professional Development of In-Service Teachers: The Case of the Dialogic Pedagogical Gatherings at Valencia “On Gia…

2021

There is a broad consensus on the impact of teacher quality on students’ outcomes. However, the debate on how to evaluate the impact of teacher training on student improvement remains open. The evaluation of the impact of in-service teacher training, organized in a network for different schools, has been analyzed very little to date. Our research displays an innovative approach in this regard, through an In-Service Professional Development Program based upon scientific evidence and dialogic principles: The Pedagogical Gatherings “On Giant’s Shoulders”. We conducted a multilevel communicative study to analyze its impact upon students’ achievement and schools’ outcomes whose teachers taking p…

A review of hydropower plants in Romania: Distribution, current knowledge, and their effects on fish in headwater streams

2021

Abstract Hydropower is currently experiencing a boom in southeast Europe. For Romania, the number of hydropower plants is estimated to be between 545 and 674, but little has been published about their environmental impact. We provide the first overview of the geographical distribution of hydropower plants in Romania, supplemented by a review of current knowledge about their environmental impact, and present case study evidence on the effects of small hydropower plants on fish in headwater streams of the Carpathian Mountains. We show that 49% of the documented 545 hydropower plants in Romania are located in Natura 2000 or other protected areas, 5% are located in water bodies with ‘very good’…

Social Return on Investment (SROI)

2013

The Social Return on Investment (SROI) is a method for measuring social outputs and valuing social outcomes in monetary terms (Boyd, 2004). The basic assumption underlying this technique is that every kind of business or organization (enterprises, private businesses, public body, charitable organizations and others) has an impact on people, society and environment. This impact can be strictly ‘economical’, but also ‘social’ and ‘environmental’. The SROI technique, however, speaks of ‘social impact’ referring generally to all aforesaid three kinds of impacts. The value to be measured by means of SROI Analysis is an added value. Then it does not consider the social value that would occur even…

Navigating multiple logics: Legitimacy and the quest for societal impact in science

2022

Academic scientists are encouraged to pursue research that delivers both scientific and societal impact. This may involve a search for alternative mechanisms of social approval which lead to endorsement of scientists’ research goals. We explore how scientists mobilise and accumulate different forms of legitimacy, which might favour their participation in practices related to innovation and societal impact. We propose three specific sources of scientific legitimacy: i) scientists’ social networks (research-related legitimacy ties), ii) prominence in the relevant academic community (reputation-based legitimacy); and direct contact with the primary beneficiaries of the research (beneficiary-ba…
