TRAGEDIA DELLA LIBERTA' E UTOPIA DI PACE. LA SOFONISBA DI GIANGIORGIO TRISSINO

2019

In the conflict of interpretations that affected Sofonisba, the first regular tragedy in Italian by Vicenza's Giangiorgio Trissino (1478-1550), two different interpretative lines were clearly distinguished. While agreeing on the importance of the work in the context of the renewal of the tragic form of the early sixteenth century, however, particularly disagree on one point, in recognizing or deny her the presence of a political ideology, of an intimate conflict. If, in fact, Marco Ariani underlines the diplomatic and political commitment made by Vicenza, an exponent of the pro-imperial feudal aristocracy, supporter of the policy of the Curia of Leo X, Giulio Ferroni, on the other hand, den…

Of whales and men: Caitríona O’Reilly’s septentrional voyage in “The Sea Cabinet” (2006)

2021

International audience; The title-poem of Caitríona O’Reilly’s second collection – The Sea Cabinet – is a sequence of five ekphrastic pieces paying tribute to the city of Hull’s past as a major whaling port. As she perambulates through the galleries of the Maritime Museum, the Irish poetess is inspired by all the paraphernalia on display: skeletons of various species of whales, whaler’s tools but also journals, logbooks, paintings, illustrations and hundreds of examples of the folk art and mythemes of the whaler. From one poem to the next, O’Reilly depicts the northernness of the Arctic Ocean as eery but bewitching otherness, focusing on illustrations of Captain Graville’s whaling ship ice-…

Imperial straightening devices in disciplinary choices of academic knowledge production

2021

Abstract In this piece, the authors question whether critical language research, in its complex collection of researcher choices, is possible beyond the discursive imaginary of critical academic scholarship. In other words, how do (allegedly) anticolonial efforts re-orient towards contribution to the imperial record? We present three vignettes, through which we grapple with the notion that researcher choice exists within the solipsism of academia. In doing so, we frame research and scholarship as a collection of choices, which we believe are better understood as a collection of fraught dilemmas. These dilemmas recognize that all academic scholarship production and its processes are birthed …

Contemporary performance art by Helena Walsh: embodiment as empowerment in an Irish context

2016

Ever since the 1970s, performance artists have used their bodies as a means to question the patriarchal control of women. In Ireland, where the body is at the center of debates over contraception, abortion and divorce, feminist performance art has proved particularly pertinent to substitute the real experiential body to the allegorical or fetishized female body. Through her performances, Helena Walsh incites the viewers to respond to the effect of ideology on the physical body. Embodiment, impersonation and incorporation make the body explicit and reopen historical wounds.

Finns in the Colonial World

2021

AbstractUtilizing such concepts as “colonial complicity” and “colonialism without colonies”, this chapter examines the case of Finns and Finland as a nation that was once oppressed but also itself complicit in colonialism. It argues that although the Finnish nation has historically been positioned in Europe between western and eastern empires, Finns were not only passive victims of (Russian) imperial rule but also active participants in the creation of imperial vocabulary in various colonial contexts, including Sápmi in the North. This chapter argues that although Finns never had overseas colonies, they were involved in the colonial world, sending out colonizers and producing images of colon…

Sota ja ulkopolitiikka Saksan keisarikunnan Reichstagissa vaalikaudella 1903-1906

2014

Tutkielmassa tarkastellaan, miten Saksan keisarikunnan valtiopäivät eli Reichstag keskusteli sodasta ja ulkopolitiikasta vaalikaudella 1903–1906. Päälähteenä ovat Reichstagin täysistuntojen pöytäkirjat. Tutkielma on poliittisen keskustelun aatehistoriaa, missä tutkitaan, millaisiin argumentteihin puhujat vetosivat puheenvuoroissaan. Tutkittu ajanjakso sijoittuu imperialismin aikakaudelle ennen ensimmäistä maailmansotaa. Tarkastelun kohteena ovat ensimmäinen Marokon kriisi, Venäjän–Japa…
