Marginal bone loss in relation to the implant neck surface: An update

2010

A review is made of the publications on the marginal bone loss of implants with a polished neck, rough neck with microthreading, and rough neck without microthreading. A PubMed search was carried out with the following key words: machined neck implant, polished neck implant, marginal bone loss, covering the period between January 1998 and March 2009. Inclusion was limited to those human clinical studies involving a minimum follow-up of 12 months, and registering the level of bone loss from the time of placement of the implant or prosthetic restoration to the end of follow-up. For most of the authors there were no significant differences in marginal bone loss between polished neck and rough …

Risk factors associated with early failure of dental implants. A literature review

2010

The aim of the study was to examine articles published on risk factors associated with early failure of dental implants. We conducted a search on PubMed for articles published between January 2000 and December 2009 using the keywords 'dental implants' and 'early failure'. Seven studies that specified the number of early failed implants and studied the associated risk factors were included. Early failures are caused by the inability of tissue to establish osseointegration prior to prosthetic restoration; however the causal factors and mechanisms are unclear. In the reviewed literature there was a higher percentage of early than late failures; nevertheless, few articles were found that analyz…

Customised products for orbital wall reconstruction: a systematic review

2021

Abstract The purpose of this systematic review was to critically analyze the recent literature to present the state of the art in customized reconstruction of orbital fractures. Three electronic databases and manual search approaches were used to identify relevant articles. Only studies with a controlled clinical study design were included. Primary outcome was defined as the status of recovery (complete/partial functional and esthetic disturbances). The benefit of intra-surgical navigation should be described. Secondary outcome was defined as the time of surgery, post-surgical events and hospitalization. A total of eight studies out of 552 records identified met the inclusion criteria. Post…

Effects of a local single dose administration of growth hormone on the osseointegration of titanium implants.

2021

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of different concentrations of growth hormone (GH) on endosteal implant?s surface at the early stages of osseointegration. Sixty tapered acid-etched titanium implants were divided into four groups: i) Collagen, used as a control group; and three experimental groups, where after collagen coating, GH was administered directly to the surface in varying concentrations: ii) 0.265 mg, iii) 0.53 mg, and iv) 1 mg. Implants were placed in an interpolated fashion in the anterior flange of C3, C4 or C5 of 15 sheep with minimum distance of 6 mm between implants. After 3-, 6- and 12-weeks of healing samples were harvested, histologically processed,…

Topographic characterisation of dental implants for commercial use.

2016

Background To characterize the surface topography of several dental implants for commercial use. Material and Methods Dental implants analyzed were Certain (Biomet 3i), Tissue Level (Straumann), Interna (BTI), MG-InHex (MozoGrau), SPI (Alphabio) and Hikelt (Bioner). Surface topography was ascertained using a confocal microscope with white light. Roughness parameters obtained were: Ra, Rq, Rv, Rp, Rt, Rsk and Rku. The results were analysed using single-factor ANOVA and Student-Neuman-Keuls(p<0.05) tests. Results Certain and Hikelt obtained the highest Ra and Rq scores, followed by Tissue Level. Interna and SPI obtained lower scores, and MG-InHex obtained the lowest score. Rv scores followed …

A Prospective Noninterventional Study to Evaluate Survival and Success of Reduced Diameter Implants Made From Titanium-Zirconium Alloy

2015

Narrow diameter implants may be at increased risk of overload due to occlusal forces; therefore, implants with higher fatigue strength may be beneficial. The aim of this observational study was to evaluate survival and success of narrow diameter (Ø 3.3 mm) TiZr alloy (Roxolid, Institut Straumann AG, Basel, Switzerland) implants for 2 years in daily dental practice. This was a prospective, non-interventional, multicenter study; no specific patient inclusion or exclusion criteria were applied. Each patient received at least one TiZr implant; the treatment plan, including implant loading and final restoration, was at the investigator's discretion. The primary outcome was implant survival and s…

Impact of abutment geometry on early implant marginal bone loss. A double‐blind, randomized, 6‐month clinical trial

2022

Objectives The objective of this study was to analyze the impact of the abutment width on early marginal bone loss (MBL). Material and Methods A balanced, randomized, double-blind clinical trial with two parallel experimental arms was conducted without a control group. The arms were “cylindrical” abutment and “concave” abutment. Eighty hexagonal internal connection implants, each with a diameter of 4 × 10 mm, were placed in healed mature bone. The main variable was the peri-implant tissue stability, which was measured as MBL at 8 weeks and 6 months. Results The final sample consisted of 77 implants that were placed in 25 patients. 38 (49.4%) were placed using the cylindrical abutment, and t…

Implant overdentures: recommendations and analysis of the clinical benefits.

2011

Due to the progress made in implantology, in recent years the interest in prosthetic rehabilitation in edentulous mouths using overdentures has increased considerably. Indications to the treatment of implant supported overdenture could be classified in three groups: the first group consists of younger members of the elderly population who have an edentulous upper jaw rehabilitated with a conventional complete denture but experience discomfort with it and therefore desire a stable prosthesis and greater comfort in the mouth; the second group, for which the use of implant overdentures is recommended, consists of older patients who require greater stability from a complete mandibular denture; …
