Motivic Pattern Extraction in Music, and Application to the Study of Tunisian Modal Music

A new methodology for automated extraction of repeated patterns in time-series data is presented, aimed in particular at the analysis of musical sequences. The basic principles consists in a search for closed patterns in a multi-dimensional parametric space. It is shown that this basic mechanism needs to be articulated with a periodic pattern discovery system, implying therefore a strict chronological scanning of the time-series data. Thanks to this modelling global pattern filtering may be avoided and rich and highly pertinent results can be obtained. Tutkimus perehtyy musiikkiterapian kliinisen improvisaation (vapaan soittoimprovisaation) käynnistämään emotionaaliseen prosessointiin masennuksen hoidossa. Se keskittyy tarkastelemaan terapian improvisaation jälkeistä aikaa, selvittäen improvisaation ja sen kuuntelun yhteyttä emotionaaliseen prosessointiin ja hoidon tuloksiin. Tutkimus kuvaa fenomenologisella lähestymistavalla aineistosta nousevia ilmiöitä, joihin liittyviä käsitteitä on haettu analyysin tueksi teoriasta. Compared to other psychotherapeutic forms, it allows for the emergence of various modes of mutual interaction, thus enabling multiple channels for emotional expression and fostering therapeutic alliance. This study investigates the analogies between the melodic evolution within clinical improvisation and the shifts in the core self, across the continuum of music therapy process. This investigation is facilitated by a hypothesis; that musical shifts in improvisation’s structure precede psychological shifts in improviser’s self during therapy. Music is a sophisticated cognitive behaviour that employs extensive bilateral neural networks. Recent research investigating the brain engaged in active music-making, both pre-composed and improvised, has localized this network, and made comparisons to similarities and differences as they relate to the production of language. Tarkastelen tutkielmassani musiikillista improvisointia osana esi- ja alkuopetusta erityisesti leikkipedagogiikan näkökulmasta. Olen kiinnostunut luovuuskasvatuksesta lapsen kehityksen ja oppimisen tukena. Tarkastelen erityisesti esi- ja alkuopetusta siksi, että valmistun musiikin aineenopettajan ammatin lisäksi luokanopettajaksi. Ikärajaus on mielestäni kiinnostava lapsen kehityksen kannalta: kuinka opetuksessa voitaisiin hyödyntää lapsen iälle luonnollisia piirteitä kuten taipumusta spontaaniuteen ja leikkiin? Lisäksi olen kiinnostunut selvittämään, kuinka opetus ja oppimateriaalit vastaavat luovuuskasvatuksen vahvaa painotusta vuoden 2014 opetussuunnitelmassa.
