Background: Accurate assessment of hepatic fibrosis in patients with chronic HBeAg-negative Hepatitis B is of crucial importance not only to predict the long-term clinical course, but also to evaluate antiviral therapy indication. The aim of this study was to prospectively assess the utility of point shear wave elastography (pSWE) for longitudinal non-invasive fibrosis assessment in a large cohort of untreated patients with chronic HBeAg-negative hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Methods: 407 consecutive patients with HBeAg-negative HBV infection who underwent pSWE, transient elastography (TE) as well as laboratory fibrosis markers, including fibrosis index based on four factors (FIB-4), a…

Multiwavelet Frames Originated From Hermite Splines

2015

The chapter presents a method for the construction of multiwavelet frame transform for manipulation of discrete-time signals. The frames are generated by three-channel perfect reconstruction oversampled multifilter banks. The design of the multifilter bank starts from a pair of interpolating multifilters, which originate from the cubic Hermite splines. The remaining multifilters are designed by factoring polyphase matrices. Input to the oversampled analysis multifilter bank is a vector-signal, which is derived from an initial scalar signal by one out of three pre-processing algorithms. The post-processing algorithms convert the vector output from the synthesis multifilter banks into a scala…

A new result on impulsive differential equations involving non-absolutely convergent integrals

2009

AbstractIn this paper we obtain, as an application of a Darbo-type theorem, global solutions for differential equations with impulse effects, under the assumption that the function on the right-hand side is integrable in the Henstock sense. We thus generalize several previously given results in literature, for ordinary or impulsive equations.

Boolean-controlled systems via receding horizon and linear programing

2009

We consider dynamic systems controlled by boolean signals or decisions. We show that in a number of cases, the receding horizon formulation of the control problem can be solved via linear programing by relaxing the binary constraints on the control. The idea behind our approach is conceptually easy: a feasible control can be forced by imposing that the boolean signal is set to one at least one time over the horizon. We translate this idea into constraints on the controls and analyze the polyhedron of all feasible controls. We specialize the approach to the stabilizability of switched and impulsively controlled systems.

Simulation of PLL with impulse signals in MATLAB: Limitations, hidden oscillations, and pull-in range

2015

The limitations of PLL simulation are demonstrated on an example of phase-locked loop with triangular phase detector characteristic. It is shown that simulation in MatLab may not reveal periodic oscillations (e.g. such as hidden oscillations) and thus may lead to unreliable conclusions on the width of pull-in range.

Measuring Impulsivity in School-Aged Boys and Examining Its Relationship with ADHD and ODD Ratings

2004

Seven different laboratory measures of impulsivity were administered to a group of 165 school-aged boys. Parents' and teachers' ratings of Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder and Oppositional/Defiant Disorder were also obtained. Factor analyses of impulsivity measures revealed the existence of a strong Inhibitory Control Factor including measures derived from Stop Task, the Continuous Performance Test, the Matching Familiar Figures Test, and the Circle Tracing Task. Other forms of impulsivity like resistance to interference, the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test and efficiency in the DRL Task loaded on a second independent factor. The Inhibitory Control factor was correlated with ADHD ra…

Performance variability, impulsivity errors and the impact of incentives as gender-independent endophenotypes for ADHD

2010

Background:Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common and highly heritable child psychiatric disorders. There is strong evidence that children with ADHD show slower and more variable responses in tasks such as Go/Nogo tapping aspects of executive functions like sustained attention and response control which may be modulated by motivational factors and/or state-regulation processes. The aim of this study was (1) to determine if these executive functions may constitute an endophenotype for ADHD; (2) to investigate for the first time whether known modulators of these executive functions may also be familial; and (3) to explore whether gender has an impact on thes…

The risky business of dopamine agonists in Parkinson disease and impulse control disorders

2011

Risk-taking behavior is characterized by pursuit of reward in spite of potential negative consequences. Dopamine neurotransmission along the mesocorticolimbic pathway is a potential modulator of risk behavior. In patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), impulse control disorder (ICD) can result from dopaminergic medication use, particularly dopamine agonists (DAA). Behaviors associated with ICD include hypersexuality as well as compulsive gambling, shopping, and eating, and these behaviors are potentially linked to alterations to risk processing. Using the Balloon Analogue Risk Task, we assessed the role of agonist therapy on risk-taking behavior in PD patients with (n = 22) and without (n =…

Impulse interval-dependent effect of sympathetic nerve stimulation on evoked acetylcholine release from the rabbit perfused atria preparation.

1995

The aim of the present study was to explore possible prejunctional effects mediated by impulse activity of sympathetic terminals on evoked acetylcholine release in an organ innervated by the autonomic ground plexus. Rabbit atria were isolated with the extrinsic right vagus and sympathetic nerves intact and perfused with Tyrode solution. Acetylcholine overflow was determined after labelling of the transmitter stores with [14C]choline and fractionation of the radioactivity on cation exchange columns. The overflow of endogenous noradrenaline was measured by HPLC and electrochemical detection. The vagus nerve was stimulated at 2 Hz for 3 min four times at intervals of 10 min. During the second …

Training Load and Energy Expenditure during Military Basic Training Period

2019

Purpose: To compare training load and energy expenditure during an 8-week military BT period among individuals having different fitness level using objective measurements in an authentic environment. Methods: Thirty-four voluntary male conscripts (age 19.1±0.3 years) were divided into three training groups (inactive, moderate, active) by their reported physical activity (PA) level evaluated by the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) prior to military service. Maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) and heart rate (HR) were determined by maximal treadmill test in the beginning and after 4 and 7 weeks of BT. During BT, HR monitors and accelerometers were used to measure PA and energy …
