Onset of Convection in an Inclined Anisotropic Porous Layer with Internal Heat Generation

2019

The onset of convection in an inclined porous layer which is heated internally by a uniform distribution of heat sources is considered. We investigate the combined effects of inclination, anisotropy and internal heat generation on the linear instability of the basic parallel flow. When the Rayleigh number is sufficiently large, instability occurs and a convective motion is set up. It turns out that the preferred motion at convection onset depends quite strongly on the anisotropy ratio, &xi

Influence of Cross-Section Shape and FRP Reinforcement Layout on Shear Capacity of Strengthened RC Beams

2022

The evaluation of the shear capacity of an FRP-strengthened reinforced-concrete beam is challenging due to the complex interaction between different contributions provided by the concrete, steel stirrup and FRP reinforcement. The shape of the beam and the FRP inclination can have paramount importance that is not often recognized by the models that are suggested by codes. The interaction among different resisting mechanisms has a significant effect on the shear capacity of beams, since it can cause a reduction in the efficiency of some resisting mechanisms. A comparative study of the performance in the shear resistance assessment provided by three models with six different effectiveness fact…

Shear resistance analytical evaluation for RC beams with transverse reinforcement with two different inclinations

2020

An analysis-oriented mechanical model for shear strength evaluation of Reinforced Concrete (RC) beams with transverse reinforcement with two different inclinations, which required a numerical analysis, is turned into a design-oriented analytical model that can easily be utilized for practical purposes. The model assessed the shear resistance, according to the “lower-bound solution”, employing a numerical procedure that maximizes the element shear strength varying the stresses in the two sets of transverse reinforcement and the magnitude and inclination of the web concrete compressive stress field. The model is formulated with the aim of representing an extension of Eurocode 2 framework to R…

NuSTARandXMM–Newtonbroad-band spectrum of SAX J1808.4–3658 during its latest outburst in 2015

2018

The first discovered accreting millisecond pulsar, SAX J1808.4-3658, went into X-ray outburst in April 2015. We triggered a 100 ks XMM-Newton ToO, taken at the peak of the outburst, and a 55 ks NuSTAR ToO, performed four days apart. We report here the results of a detailed spectral analysis of both the XMM-Newton and NuSTAR spectra. While the XMM-Newton spectrum appears much softer than in previous observations, the NuSTAR spectrum confirms the results obtained with XMM-Newton during the 2008 outburst. We find clear evidence of a broad iron line that we interpret as produced by reflection from the inner accretion disk. For the first time, we use a self-consistent reflection model to fit the…

Effects of Joint Kinetics on Energy Cost during Repeated Vertical Jumping

2019

The present study was designed to investigate the effects of lower limb joint kinetics on energy cost during jumping.Eight male middle and long-distance runners volunteered for the study. The subjects were asked to repeat vertical jumps at a frequency of 2 Hz for 3 min on a force platform in three different surface inclination conditions: Incline (+8°), Level (0°), and Decline (-8°). Sagittal plane kinematics were obtained using a high-speed video camera. Simultaneously, ground reaction forces and EMG of the lower limb muscles were recorded. Energy cost was calculated using steady-state oxygen uptake, respiratory ratio, and vertical distance of the body.In all conditions, energy cost correl…

Shear Capacity Model with Variable Orientation of Concrete Stress Field for RC Beams Strengthened by FRP with Different Inclinations

2021

A design-oriented analytical model able to evaluate the shear capacity of reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened with fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) sheets or strips oriented in any direction is proposed. The formulation of the model is based on the variable-inclination stress-field approach, aiming to extend the provisions of current European standards to beams strengthened in shear using FRP. The main novelty of the model lies in taking into account the possible different inclination of steel stirrup and FRP reinforcement in determining the orientation of a compressed concrete stress field, and in shear strength evaluation, overcoming the approximation of the known models with variab…

Legri Background. Short Term Variability

2001

Background modelling for LEO satellites with high orbital inclination is not an easy task. The diffuse background component is dominated by the background coming from strong interactions with Earth magnetosphere trapped particles. Magnetic shielding is variable along the orbits and crosses through the SAA induce high radioactivity decay counting ratios. The aim of this paper is to present a model for the background total counting ratio of the 17 operative CdZnTe detectors on LEGRI in the short time scales and for observing periods outside crosses through SAA having enough time to cool LEGRI after the last SAA transit. Fluxes measured have been modelled in terms of the Mcllwain parameter L u…

The third planet

1992

This paper examines the conceptions of planetary phenomena related to temperature change as held by primary school teacher trainees at the Department of Teacher Education of Jyvaskyla University. The data were collected by means of an essay test, supplemented by interviews. The results show that very few students have internalized these phenomena in accordance with present‐day scientific concepts. The significance of the Earth's sphericity seems particularly obscure. The influence of the angle of inclination of the Earth's axis is misunderstood. Similarly, temperature differences are erroneously attributed to the distance from the sun of the Earth or of a particular place. The students do n…

RC beams retrofitted by FRP oriented in any direction: Influence of the effectiveness factors

2022

Shear strength of FRP-retrofitted RC beams is usually influenced by different brittle failure modes characterizing the collapse of the FRP reinforcement. The most significant analytical models for assessing the shear strength of FRP-retrofitted RC beams reflect the effect of brittle failure through an effectiveness factor “R”, which reduces the ultimate tensile strength of FRP. The brittle collapse of FRP reinforcement often leads to a lower shear contribution by steel stirrups due to hindering of the yielding of all stirrups involved by critical cracking. Some analytical models consider this phenomenon introducing a further effectiveness factor “r”, which reduces the yielding strength of s…

New stage-discharge relationship for inclined non-rectangular weirs

2018

Abstract In this paper, the outflow process of inclined non-rectangular weirs is studied applying the dimensional analysis and the incomplete self-similarity theory. At first, a new stage-discharge equation, applicable for the non-rectangular weirs having a different geometrical shape (parabolic, semicircular, inverted semicircular), is theoretically deduced using a characteristic width. Then, this power stage-discharge relationship (Eq. (17) ) is calibrated and tested using measurements carried out by Raiknar for parabolic, semicircular and inverted semicircular weirs having different inclination respect to the vertical (10°, 20°, 30°, 40° and 45°). For each geometrical shape, the analysis…
