Heterogeneous contributions of change in population distribution of body mass index to change in obesity and underweight

From 1985 to 2016, the prevalence of underweight decreased, and that of obesity and severe obesity increased, in most regions, with significant variation in the magnitude of these changes across regions. We investigated how much change in mean body mass index (BMI) explains changes in the prevalence of underweight, obesity, and severe obesity in different regions using data from 2896 population-based studies with 187 million participants. Changes in the prevalence of underweight and total obesity, and to a lesser extent severe obesity, are largely driven by shifts in the distribution of BMI, with smaller contributions from changes in the shape of the distribution. Darbu izstrādāja LU Biznesa, vadības un ekonomikas fakultātes Vadības zinības bakalaura studiju programmas 4. kursa studente Grieta Vojecka. Darba tēma – “Latvijas uzņēmējdarbības vides attīstības prognozes”. Darba mērķis ir izanalizēt, kādi uzņēmējdarbības vidi raksturojošie rādītāji ietekme uzņēmuma dibināšanas lēmumu, un izveidot prognozi par Latvijas uzņēmējdarbības vidi ietekmējošu rādītāju tendencēm. Darba uzdevumi ir izpētīt, kādi eksistē uzņēmējdarbības vidi ietekmējoši rādītāji, izanalizēt indeksus, izpētīt Latvijas uzņēmējdarbības vidi un veikt prognozi, kā mainīsies vide triju gadu laikā. Bakalaura darbā “Ekstremālo nokrišņu raksturs un izmaiņu tendences Zemgalē un Latgalē (1950. – 2013.)” analizēti diennakts nokrišņu rādītāji Zemgales un Latgales reģioniem. Lai detalizēti identificētu ekstremālo vērtību tendences, tika izmantoti pieci nokrišņus raksturojošie indeksi – intensīvo nokrišņu dienu (R10 mm), ļoti intensīvo dienu (R20 mm), mēreni mitro dienu (R75p), ļoti mitro dienu (R95p) un ekstremāli mitro dienu (R99p) indeksu izmaiņas 63 gadu laikā. Pētījumā izmantotas kopā 13 novērojumu stacijas – 7 stacijas Zemgalē un 6 - Latgalē. Birth weight, adult weight, and cardiovascular biomarkers : Evidence from the Cardiovascular Young Finns Study

This study quantifies the causal effect of birth weight on cardiovascular biomarkers in adulthood using the Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study (YFS). We apply a multivariable Mendelian randomization (MVMR) method that provides a novel approach to improve inference in causal analysis based on a mediation framework. The results show that birth weight is linked to triglyceride levels (β = −0.294; 95% CI [−0.591, 0.003]) but not to low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels (β = 0.007; 95% CI [−0.168, 0.183]). We examined longitudinal associations between individual leisure activities (television viewing, video viewing, computer games, listening to music, board games, musical instrument playing, reading, arts, crafts, socializing, clubs or scouts, sports, outdoor activities) and being overweight using logistic regression and latent class analysis in a cohort of Finnish twins responding to self-report questionnaires at 11–12 (N = 5184), 14, and 17 years. Bakalaura darba tēma ir “Latvijas Universitātes zinātnieku publikācijas un citējamība pedagoģijas nozarē”. Mērķis ir noskaidrot Latvijas Universitātes zinātnieku publikāciju skaitu un citējamību pedagoģijas nozarē citējamības datubāzēs Scopus un Web of Science un salīdzināt ar pārējo Baltijas valstu zinātnieku sniegumu pedagoģijas nozarē. Teorētisko bāzi veido bibliometrijas teorija. Pētījuma laikā gūtie rezultāti norāda, ka pēc indeksēto zinātnisko publikāciju skaita LU ir konkurētspējīga ar citām Latvijas zinātniskajām institūcijām, bet nav konkurētspējīga ar Baltijas valstu ietekmīgākajām zinātniskajām institūcijām.
Genetic and environmental effects on body mass index during adolescence: a prospective study among Finnish twins

Objective: To study genetic and environmental factors affecting body mass index (BMI) and BMI phenotypic correlations across adolescence. Design: Prospective, population-based, twin cohort study. Participants and methods: We used twin modeling in 2413 monozygotic and same-sex and opposite-sex dizygotic Finnish twin pairs born in 1983–1987 and assessed using self-report questionnaires at 11–12, 14 and 17 years of age. Results: Heritability of BMI was estimated to be 0.58–0.69 among 11–12- and 14-year-old boys and girls, 0.83 among 17-year-old boys and 0.74 among 17-year-old girls.
