Does age over 80 years have to be a contraindication for lung cancer surgery—a nationwide database study
2018
IF 1.804 (2017); International audience; Background: Nowadays surgery remains the best treatment for localized lung cancer (LC). However, patients over 80 years old are often denied surgery because of the postoperative risk of death. This study aimed to estimate in-hospital mortality (IHM) and determine whether age over 80 is the most important predictor of IHM after LC surgery. Methods: From January 2005 to December 2015, 97,440 patients, including 4,438 patients over 80 years old, were operated on for LC and recorded in the French Administrative Database. Characteristics of patients, hospitals and surgery were analysed. Results: Crude IHM was 3.73% (n=3,639) and 7.77% (n=345) for the over 8…
Suggestions for lung function testing in the context of COVID-19
2021
The 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic is currently a challenge worldwide. Due to the characteristics of lung function tests, the risk of cross infection may be high between health care workers and patients. The role of lung function testing is well defined for the diagnosis of various diseases and conditions. Lung function tests are also indispensable in evaluating the response to medical treatment, in monitoring patient respiratory and systemic pathologies, and in evaluating preoperative risk in cardiothoracic and major abdominal surgeries. However, lung function testing represents a potential route for COVID-19 transmission, due to the aerosol generated during the procedures an…
Diagnostic procedures in internal medicine. Thoracentesis, paracentesis and arthrocentesis in hospital practice. [Procedure diagnostiche in medicina …
1999
The aim of this paper is to give a rapid and concise guide for the diagnostic procedures frequently used in internist's clinical practice. Thoracentesis, paracentesis and arthrocentesis were analyzed as regards to indications, contraindications, procedure of execution and interpretation of findings. Addressed to the young physician, the present paper could also be useful as a rapid guide for the experienced physician which does not frequently use these procedures.
Detection and Recognition of Target Signals in Radar Clutter via Adaptive CFAR Tests
2006
In this paper, adaptive CFAR tests are described which allow one to classify radar clutter into one of several major categories, including bird, weather, and target classes. These tests do not require the arbitrary selection of priors as in the Bayesian classifier. The decision rule of the recognition techniques is in the form of associating the p-dimensional vector of observations on the object with one of the m specific classes. When there is the possibility that the object does not belong to any of the m classes, then this object is to be classified as belonging to one of the m classes or to class m+1 whose distribution is unspecified. The tests are invariant to intensity changes in the …
Efficacy of Low-Dose Paroxetine for the Treatment of Hot Flushes in Surgical and Physiological Postmenopausal Women: Systematic Review and Meta-Analy…
2019
Background and Objectives: Hot flushes and sleep disturbances are the most common vasomotor symptoms (VMS) reported by postmenopausal women. Hormonal treatment is to date referred to as the gold standard approach but not suitable for all the patients. Alternative treatments are needed in case of a contraindication to menopausal hormone therapy (MHT), adverse side effects, and poor compliance. Paroxetine salt is the only nonhormonal medication approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for the management of VMS. Nonetheless, few trials with low consensus are available about this topic. In this review, we aimed to evaluate the efficacy of low-dose paroxetine therapy in the treatment of v…
Territorial development models: A new strategic vision to analyze the relationship between the environment, public goods and geographical indications
2021
Abstract Geographical indications (GIs) are increasingly seen as a tool to support sustainable local development. This study focuses on how geographical indications can contribute to a territorial public system, and how this can be threatened by several market failures. Starting from the economic literature on public goods, this document highlights how geographical indications, and their legal protection, can guarantee a sustainable development model. This article aims to illustrate and develop new economic arguments that support a more comprehensive political approach to the contribution that Geographical indications make to sustainable development. The research is focused in Sicily on the…
Interventistica eco-guidata per l’articolazione d’anca
2013
Signals of intensification and attenuation in orchestra and choir conduction
2017
Based on a model of communication according to which not only words but also body signals constitute lexicons (Poggi, 2007), the study presented aimes at building a lexicon of conductors’ multimodal behaviours requesting intensification and attenuation of sound intensity. In a corpus of concerts and rehearsals, the conductors’ body signals requesting to play or sing forte, piano, crescendo, diminuendo were analysed through an annotation scheme describing the body signals, their meanings, and their semiotic devices: generic codified (the same as in everyday language); specific codified (shared with laypeople but with specific meanings in conduction); direct iconic, (resemblance between visua…
Study on the Linezolid Prescription According to the Approval of Indication in a University Hospital.
2015
Indications for linezolid use are nosocomial or community-acquired pneumonia and skin infections or soft tissue infection caused by gram-positive microorganisms, but new recommendations may emerge. It is important to balance benefits with risks because severe adverse events have been described in patients taking linezolid treatment. Accordingly, we evaluated the suitability of linezolid prescription according to approval of indication by evaluating the presence of drug-related problems (DRP) in a University hospital. DRP were identified in 36 patients (50.0%). In most cases, they were related to known or established indications (15 patients, 20.8%), to safety (5 patients, 6.9%), and to both…
Ecological Indicator Values for Europe (EIVE) 1.0
2023
Aims: To develop a consistent ecological indicator value system for Europe for five of the main plant niche dimensions: soil moisture (M), soil nitrogen (N), soil reaction (R), light (L) and temperature (T). Study area: Europe (and closely adjacent regions). Methods: We identified 31 indicator value systems for vascular plants in Europe that contained assessments on at least one of the five aforementioned niche dimensions. We rescaled the indicator values of each dimension to a continuous scale, in which 0 represents the minimum and 10 the maximum value present in Europe. Taxon names were harmonised to the Euro+Med Plantbase. For each of the five dimensions, we calculated European values fo…
