The EU Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) 2010/31/EU is a step in the right direction to promote near zero energy buildings (NZEB) in a step-wise manner, starting with minimum energy performance and cost optimal thresholds for “reference buildings” (RBs) for each category. Activation of nitric oxide signaling by the rheumatoid arthritis shared epitope

Objective. Susceptibility to rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is closely associated with HLA–DRB1 alleles encoding a shared epitope (SE) in positions 70–74 of the HLA–DR chain. The mechanistic basis for this association is unknown. Given the proposed pathogenic role of nitric oxide (NO) in RA, this study was undertaken to examine whether the SE can trigger NO signaling events. Methods. The intracellular levels of NO were measured with the fluorescent NO probe 4,5diaminofluorescein diacetate and by the 2,3diaminonaphthalene method. Demand Sharing Inaccuracies in Supply Chains: A Simulation Study

We investigate two main sources of information inaccuracies (i.e., errors and delays) in demand information sharing along the supply chain (SC). Firstly, we perform a systematic literature review on inaccuracy in demand information sharing and its impact on supply chain dynamics. Secondly, we model several SC settings using system dynamics and assess the impact of such information inaccuracies on SC performance. Application of viability PCR to discriminate the infectivity of hepatitis A virus in food samples.

Abstract Transmitted through the fecal–oral route, the hepatitis A virus (HAV) is acquired primarily through close personal contact and foodborne transmission. HAV detection in food is mainly carried out by quantitative RT-PCR (RT-qPCR). The discrimination of infectious and inactivated viruses remains a key obstacle when using RT-qPCR to quantify enteric viruses in food samples. Initially, viability dyes, propidium monoazide (PMA) and ethidium monoazide (EMA), were evaluated for the detection and quantification of infectious HAV in lettuce wash water. Proteomic analysis of Kveim reagent identifies targets of cellular immunity in sarcoidosis

Background Kveim-reagent (Kv) skin testing was a historical method of diagnosing sarcoidosis. Intradermal injection of treated sarcoidosis spleen tissue resulted in a granuloma response at injection site by 4–6 weeks. Previous work indicates proteins as the possible trigger of this reaction. Women’s empowerment and child mortality: the case of Bangladesh

Bangladesh is the Southern Asian country that has been experiencing the highest absolute decline in the Under Five Mortality Rate in the past 15 years. This paper focuses on the importance of women’s education and empowerment variables in explaining this extraordinary result. We use a twolevel multilevel logistic regression to take into account the great differences among territorial communities in terms of child mortality reduction. It emerges that the importance of woman’s empowerment - measured as individual and as mother - remains relevant even when the context is considered. A sensitivity analysis has been conducted to test the relevance of different indicators of female empowerment.

A Model for Developing an Academic Activity Index for Higher Education Instructors Based on Composite Indicators

The assessment of the teacher performance is a subject of criticism due to the lack of a well-establish methodology. This study develops an overall score to measure the dimensions that encompass the academic activities. To that end, a Benefit-of-the-doubt model is proposed. The advantage of this technique is the flexibility in the weights, so that the model selects for each teacher the most favourable set of weights.
