Black-Hole Accretion Discs and Jets at Super-Eddington Luminosity

Super-Eddington accretion discs with 3 and 15 dot M_E around black holes with mass 10 M_sun are examined by two-dimensional radiation hydrodynamical calculations extending from the inner disc edge to 5*10^4 r_g and lasting up to \sim 10^6 r_g/c. The dominant radiation-pressure force in the inner region of the disc accelerates the gas vertically to the disc plane, and jets with 0.2 -- 0.4$c$ are formed along the rotational axis. In the case of the lower accretion rate, the initially anisotropic high-velocity jet expands outward and becomes gradually isotropic flow in the distant region. New insights on the puzzling LMXB 1RXS J180408.9-342058: the intermediate state, the clocked type-I X-ray bursts and much more

1RXS J180408.9--342058 is a low mass X-ray binary hosting a neutron star, which shows X-ray activity at very different mass-accretion regimes, from very faint to almost the Eddington luminosity. In this work, we present a comprehensive X-ray study of this source using data from the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, NuSTAR and INTEGRAL/JEM-X. In order to follow the spectral evolution, we analysed the 2015 outburst using Swift data and three Nustar observations. Besides the canonical hard and soft spectral states, we identified the rarely observed intermediate state. Observation of TeV gamma rays from the Cygnus region with the ARGO-YBJ experiment

We report the observation of TeV gamma-rays from the Cygnus region using the ARGO-YBJ data collected from 2007 November to 2011 August. Several TeV sources are located in this region including the two bright extended MGRO J2019+37 and MGRO J2031+41. According to the Milagro data set, at 20 TeV MGRO J2019+37 is the most significant source apart from the Crab Nebula. No signal from MGRO J2019+37 is detected by the ARGO-YBJ experiment, and the derived flux upper limits at 90% confidence level for all the events above 600 GeV with medium energy of 3 TeV are lower than the Milagro flux, implying that the source might be variable and hard to be identified as a pulsar wind nebula. Data from: Individual differences in selective attention predict speech identification at a cocktail party

Listeners with normal hearing show considerable individual differences in speech understanding when competing speakers are present, as in a crowded restaurant. Here, we show that one source of this variance are individual differences in the ability to focus selective attention on a target stimulus in the presence of distractors. In 50 young normal-hearing listeners, the performance in tasks measuring auditory and visual selective attention was associated with sentence identification in the presence of spatially separated competing speakers. Plasticity in life-history characteristics can influence many ecological and evolutionary phenomena, including how invading organisms cope with novel conditions in new locations or how environmental change affects organisms in native locations. Women’s empowerment and child mortality: the case of Bangladesh

Bangladesh is the Southern Asian country that has been experiencing the highest absolute decline in the Under Five Mortality Rate in the past 15 years. This paper focuses on the importance of women’s education and empowerment variables in explaining this extraordinary result. We use a twolevel multilevel logistic regression to take into account the great differences among territorial communities in terms of child mortality reduction. It emerges that the importance of woman’s empowerment - measured as individual and as mother - remains relevant even when the context is considered. A sensitivity analysis has been conducted to test the relevance of different indicators of female empowerment.

Some Effects of Individual Learning on the Evolution of Sensors

In this paper, we present an abstract model of sensor evolution, where sensor development is only determined by artificial evolution and the adaptation of agent reactions is accomplished by individual learning. With the environment cast into a MDP framework, sensors can be conceived as a map from environmental states to agent observations and Reinforcement Learning algorithms can be utilised. On the basis of a simple gridworld scenario, we present some results of the interaction between individual learning and evolution of sensors.
