The dipole response of nuclei with large neutron excess

2003

The dipole response of neutron-rich nuclei in the mass range from A = 10 to A = 22 and with mass to charge ratios of 2.5 to 2.8 has been invesitigated experimentally utilizing electromagnetic excitation in heavy-ion collisions at beam energies around 600 MeV/u.

Elastic and inelastic LSP-nucleus scattering on medium-heavy nuclei

2010

Elastic and inelastic scattering rates of the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) off nuclei are derived for the stable iodine, xenon and cesium detectors. The parameters of the supersymmetric theory are decoupled from the nuclear structure. The involved nuclear wave functions are calculated in the nuclear shell model by using a realistic effective two-nucleon interaction in a realistic valence space. By using fitted nuclear gyromagnetic factors we successfully reproduce the relevant spectroscopic data in the discussed nuclei.

Resonant formation of pionic atoms with neutron collisions

1992

We study the {ital n}+{ital A}{r arrow}({ital A}{prime}{pi}{sub {ital b}}{sup {minus}}){r arrow}{ital n}+{ital A} reaction, or resonant formation of pionic atoms, with neutron scattering. We evaluate the contribution of the interference of this reaction channel in {sup 40}Ca and {sup 208}Pb to the elastic scattering amplitude at backward angles. The ratio of signal to the background at 80{degree} is about 10{sup {minus}3}, and we estimate that the ratio does not improve at higher angles, hence making this reaction impractical. Our findings have repercussions on a similar reaction now running at the Indiana University Cyclotron Facility.

Structure ofSb118nucleus

1992

{gamma}, {gamma}{gamma}-coincidence, internal conversion electron, and {gamma}-ray angular distribution spectra of the {sup 118}Sn({ital p},{ital n}{gamma}){sup 118}Sb reaction were measured at different bombarding proton energies between 5.5 and 7.5 MeV. {gamma}, {gamma}{gamma}-coincidence, and internal conversion electron spectra of the {sup 115}In ({alpha},{ital n}{gamma}){sup 118}Sb reaction were also measured at {ital E}{sub {alpha}}=14.5 MeV. Ge(HP), Ge(Li), Ge(LEPS) {gamma}-ray detectors, as well as a superconducting magnetic lens electron spectrometer (with Si(Li) detectors), were used in the experiments. About 210 (including {similar to}130 new) {gamma} rays have been assigned to {…

Measurement of magnetic monopole transition in electron scattering fromO16as direct test of dispersive effects

1991

For the first time an experiment has been performed to measure a magnetic monopole transition in inelastic electron scattering. In {sup 16}O the 0{sup +}{r arrow}0{sup {minus}} transition to the level at {ital E}{sub {ital x}}=10.957 MeV has been observed with a cross section of {ital d}{sigma}/{ital d}{Omega}=(5.4{plus minus}3.8){times}10{sup {minus}37} cm{sup {minus}2}/sr. Measurement of this transition is a direct signature of two-step contributions in electron scattering. Our measurement is in good agreement with the strength calculated for this transition.

Giant resonances in unstable oxygen isotopes

1999

Abstract Electromagnetic and nuclear breakup of the neutron-rich Oxygen isotopes ranging from A = 17 to A = 22 is studied experimentally in reactions at energies around 600 MeV/u. The beams were produced in fragmentation reactions and separated by the GSI Fragment Separator FRS. By measuring the four-momenta of all decay products after inelastic scattering and neutron decay of the projectile, the excitation energy is determined. From the differential cross sections dσ dE ∗ for electromagnetic excitation, the E1-strength distributions can be deduced. For 18,20,22O, low-lying dipole strength is observed, exhausting about 5% of the Thomas Reiche Kuhn sumrule for energies up to 5 MeV above the …

Proton Inelastic Scattering onNi56in Inverse Kinematics

1994

Inelastic proton scattering to the first excited ${2}^{+}$ state of the doubly magic $^{56}\mathrm{Ni}$ nucleus was investigated in inverse kinematics, using a secondary beam of radioactive $^{56}\mathrm{Ni}$ nuclei. At an incident energy of 101 MeV/nucleon, a value $B(E2,{0}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{2}^{+})=600\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}120 {e}^{2}$ ${\mathrm{fm}}^{4}$ was measured. This result completes the set of experimental data for the first excited ${2}^{+}$ states in the $1f\ensuremath{-}2p$ shell with a closed shell of neutrons or protons. These data are compared to recent shell-model calculations.

Multi-Scale Modeling of Quantum Semiconductor Devices

2006

This review is concerned with three classes of quantum semiconductor equations: Schrodinger models, Wigner models, and fluid-type models. For each of these classes, some phenomena on various time and length scales are presented and the connections between micro-scale and macro-scale models are explained. We discuss Schrodinger-Poisson systems for the simulation of quantum waveguides and illustrate the importance of using open boundary conditions. We present Wigner-based semiconductor models and sketch their mathematical analysis. In particular we discuss the Wigner-Poisson-Focker-Planck system, which is the starting point of deriving subsequently the viscous quantum hydrodynamic model. Furt…
