Solid-State Analog of an Optical Interferometer

To some extend one may treat a metal ring with two probes as a solid-state analog of an optical interferometer. One node can be considered as a beam splitter (bi-prism, for example), and the electric current at the other node as an equivalent to a light intensity of an interference pattern formed at a screen. In optics, to obtain a stationary pattern one should use a monochromatic source of radiation, as afterwards in a conventional passive media (i.e. air) the phase of the radiation is preserved. Antiferromagnetism and the node structure of the superconducting order parameter of UPd Al

The node structure of the superconducting order parameter of the heavy-fermion system is analyzed within the weak-coupling theory. A pairing interaction induced by the exchange of antiferromagnetic spin excitations is assumed as suggested by recent inelastic neutron scattering experiments and tunneling spectroscopy. The multi-sheeted Fermi surface is taken into account. Based on a model susceptibility for the simple antiferromagnetic structure of , line nodes result at the rim of the magnetic Brillouin zone.

Superconductivity mediated by spin fluctuations in the heavy-fermion compound UPd2 Al3

It is well known that any weak attractive electron–electron interaction in metals can in principle cause the formation of Cooper pairs, which then condense into a superconducting ground state1. In conventional superconductors, this attractive interaction is mediated by lattice vibrations (phonons). But for the heavy-fermion and high-temperature superconductors, alternative pairing interactions are considered to be possible2. EPPS16 - First nuclear PDFs to include LHC data

We present results of our recent EPPS16 global analysis of NLO nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs). For the first time, dijet and heavy gauge boson production data from LHC proton-lead collisions have been included in a global fit. Especially, the CMS dijets play an important role in constraining the nuclear effects in gluon distributions. With the inclusion of also neutrino-nucleus deeply-inelastic scattering and pion-nucleus Drell-Yan data and a proper treatment of isospin-corrected data, we were able to free the flavor dependence of the valence and sea quark nuclear modifications for the first time. This gives us less biased, yet larger, flavor by flavor uncertainty estimates. …

Magnetic clusters from polyoxometalate complexes

Abstract The present article highlights the increasing interest of polyoxometalates in molecular magnetism, providing at the same time a perspective of the state-of-the-art in this area. The main focus is the polyoxotungstates. The first aspect we discuss is that of the coordination chemistry of these metal–oxide ligands. We show that this chemistry leads to remarkable examples of well-insulated magnetic clusters of controlled nuclearity and topology. CONTRIBUTION OF PSEUDO-FOCUSED SOFT PROTONS TO THE BACKGROUND OF ATHENA

This PhD thesis explores the role of low energy protons, the so-called ‘soft protons', as a component of the background in view of the future ESA's X-ray mission Athena. As a matter of fact, a high level of soft proton flux at the focal plane of Athena can adversely affect the scientific goals of the mission. To prevent this, a correct estimate of the soft proton flux expected at the focal plane of the satellite is fundamental. Such an estimate can be achieved only if the reflectivity of soft protons from the optics is well understood, with efforts on both the experimental and the theoretical sides.
