The Ontogenesis of Action Syntax

2019

Language and action share similar organizational principles. Both are thought to be hierarchical and recursive in nature. Here we address the relationship between language and action from developmental and neurophysiological perspectives. We discuss three major aspects: The extent of the analogy between language and action; the necessity to extend research on the yet largely neglected aspect of action syntax; the positive contribution of a developmental approach to this topic. We elaborate on the claim that adding an ontogenetic approach will help to obtain a comprehensive picture about both the interplay between language and action and its development, and to answer the question whether th…

Science in early childhood education: the perception of Spanish teachers during initial training

2019

Science teaching is present in the curriculum at all levels of education. However, little research has been done into what content is taught, how it is taught and what pupils actually learn at the pre-primary stage. In this paper, we will study student teachers' perception about what science teaching is being carried out in Second Cycle of Childhood Education classrooms (3-4-5 years). Using their experiences from teaching practice, a number of pre-school education degree students have ompleted a questionnaire through which to understand better the educational reality under study. The results reveal the limited attention given to certain content areas and the absence of key activities throug…

Congenital heart defects in newborns with apparently isolated single gastrointestinal malformation: A retrospective study.

2015

Abstract Background Congenital gastrointestinal system malformations/abdominal wall defects (GISM) may appear as isolated defects (single or complex), or in association with multiple malformations. The high incidence of association of GISM and congenital heart defects (CHD) in patients with syndromes and malformative sequences is known, but less expected is the association of apparently isolated single GISM and CHD. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of CHD in newborns with isolated GISM, and the possibility to modify the diagnostic-therapeutic approach just before the onset of cardiac symptoms or complications. Methods Anamnestic, clinical, and imaging data of newborns …

A new case of Worster-Drought syndrome

2012

Introduction: Worster-Drought syndrome (WDS) consists of a congenital pseudobulbar palsy and is usually associated with spastic tetraplegia, learning impairment, behavioural problems, and epilepsy. Congenital bilateral perisylvian syndrome (CBPS) is characterized by bilateral perisylvian polymicrogyria on imaging. Clark et al, have previously proposed a WDS spectrum that includes CBPS, speculating that it may be due to malformation of the perisylvian region due to various perinatal or congenital causes, whether demonstrable on imaging, or functional and not visible with current imaging techniques. Worster-Drought suggested that the syndrome is probably a developmental defect of the motor tr…

Congenital mitral regurgitation caused by a perforation in the anterior leaflet: Perioperative evaluation by color-coded Doppler echocardiography

1990

Color-coded two-dimensional (2D) echocardiography confirmed the presence of severe congenital mitral regurgitation in an 8-month-old infant. Intraoperative inspection revealed an isolated perforation in the anterior leaflet.

Congenital reduction in number of nephrons accelerates renal damage, and limits proximal tubular growth response to release of neonatal partial urete…

2012

Aim: to analyze the evolution of the response to persistent partial ureteral obstruction (PUO) and obstruction/release (PUO/Rel) in mice with 50% reduction in the number of nephrons from 21 days of age (time of weaning) to 42 days of age (adulthood). Methods: C57/BL6 wild-type (WT) and mice with oligosyndactylism and 50% reduction of nephron number (Os/+), were subjected to sham operation or PUO in the first 2 days of life. Additional mice underwent release of obstruction at 7 days (PUO-Rel). The study was performed in kidneys harvested at 21 and 42 days. Using histomorphometry, glomerular area (GA) was determined by PAS staining, and fractional proximal tubular (PT) mass and intact glomeru…

Proposals to innovate and investigate about understanding of the environment in Pre-school and Primary Education.

2017

Italian inter-society expert panel position on radiological exposure in Neonatal Intensive Care Units.

2020

Abstract Background In the recent years, clinical progress and better medical assistance for pregnant women, together with the introduction of new complex technologies, has improved the survival of preterm infants. However, this result requires frequent radiological investigations mostly represented by thoracic and abdominal radiographs in incubators. This document was elaborated by an expert panel Italian inter-society working group (Radiologists, Paediatricians, Medical Physicists) with the aim to assist healthcare practitioners in taking choices involving radiation exposures of new-born infants and to provide practical recommendations about justification and optimization in Neonatal Inte…

Infants' brain responses for speech sound changes in fast multifeature MMN paradigm.

2013

Abstract Objective We investigated whether newborn speech-sound discrimination can be studied in 40min using fast multifeature mismatch negativity (MMN) paradigm and do the results differ from those obtained with the traditional oddball paradigm. Methods Newborns' MMN responses to five types of changes (consonant identity, F0, intensity, vowel duration and vowel identity) were recorded in the multifeature group ( N =15) and vowel duration and vowel identity changes in the oddball group ( N =13), after which the MMNs from both groups were compared with each others. Results Statistically significant MMNs in the 190–600ms time range from the stimulus onset were found for most change types in b…

Newborn infants' auditory system is sensitive to Western music chord categories

2013

Neural encoding of abstract rules in the audition of newborn infants has been recently demonstrated in several studies using event-related potentials (ERPs). In the present study the neural encoding of Western music chords was investigated in newborn infants. Using ERPs, we examined whether the categorizations of major vs. minor and consonance vs. dissonance are present at the level of the change-related mismatch response (MMR). Using an oddball paradigm, root minor, dissonant and inverted major chords were presented in a context of consonant root major chords. The chords were transposed to several different frequency levels, so that the deviant chords did not include a physically deviant f…
