Increased incidence of pertussis has been noted among infants too young to be immunized. We studied the disease burden of pertussis in pediatric intensive care units and the source of infection in several Asian, European and Latin American countries.The study was conducted in 7 countries from September 2001 to January 2004. Children1 year of age were enrolled from pediatric intensive care units (PICU) and pediatric wards if they presented with respiratory failure, apnea, bradycardia, or cough accompanied by paroxysms, vomiting, whoop or cyanosis. Comparison of voltammetric and high performance liquid chromatographic methods for ascorbic acid determination in infant formulas

Abstract Two methods — voltammetric and high performance liquid Chromatographic (HPLC) — useful for determining ascorbic acid in foods, were compared to ascertain which of them could be used for routine determination of ascorbic acid in infant formulas. Both methods were used to assay 10 identical samples of an adapted cow's milk infant formula and 10 samples of soya protein formula. Precision was determined, the variance of each method was measured, and the methods were compared with each other. A case of femoral-facial syndrome in a patient with autism spectrum disorders.

The Femoral hypoplasia - unusual facies syndrome (FHUF) or Femoral - facial syndrome (FFS) was at first described in 1975. Up to now about 60 cases have been reported. According to our knowledge only 4 cases have had congenital central nervous system's malformations, furthermore the main stages of psychomotor development are almost always reported as normal or slightly altered in early childhood. We describe the first case of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) in a patient with FFS, emphasizing that this rare association could be one of many unrecognized underlying features.

Bone Fusion in Normal and Pathological Development is Constrained by the Network Architecture of the Human Skull

The premature fusion of cranial bones, craniosynostosis, affects the correct development of the skull producing morphological malformations in newborns. To assess the susceptibility of each craniofacial articulation to close prematurely, we used a network model of the skull to quantify the link reliability (an index based on stochastic block modeling and Bayesian inference) of each articulation. We show that, of the 93 human skull articulations at birth, the few articulations that are associated with nonsyndromic craniosynostosis conditions have statistically significant lower reliability scores than the others. Cronobacter ( Enterobacter sakazakii ) is an emerging foodborne pathogen that causes neonatal meningitis , necrotizing enterocolitis and sepsis with case-fatality rates of 20- 50%.
