The incidence of influenza-associated hospitalizations in children in Germany

Since new vaccines and anti-viral drugs for influenza have become available, collation of actual and country-specific epidemiological data is essential. Since respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a well known paediatric airway pathogen and some epidemiological data exist already, a comparison between influenza and RSV seems warranted. From July 1996 to June 2001 the naso-pharyngeal aspirates (NPA) of children from birth to 16 years of age, admitted to one of the two paediatric hospitals in Kiel, Germany, were investigated by a nine-valent multiplex reverse transcriptase PCR assay. Identification of a clone of Escherichia coli O103:H2 as a potential agent of hemolytic-uremic syndrome in France

In a French multicenter study, six verocytotoxin-producing Escherichia coli strains were isolated from the stools of 6 of 69 children suffering from hemolytic-uremic syndrome. All strains belonged to serotype O103:H2, a serotype commonly associated with diarrhea in weaned rabbits in France. To determine whether the strains from humans and rabbits were genetically related, they were compared by analyzing their esterase electropherotypes and the restriction fragment length polymorphisms of the ribosomal DNA regions. A novel VIM‐type metallo‐beta‐lactamase (VIM‐14) in a Pseudomonas aeruginosa clinical isolate from a neonatal intensive care unit

AbstractA Pseudomonas aeruginosa highly resistant to carbapenems was isolated in a neonatal intensive care unit in Palermo, Italy. The strain was found to carry a novel VIM‐type enzyme, classified as VIM‐14. The novel enzyme differs from VIM‐4 in a G31S mutation. VIM‐14 was harboured in a class 1 integron with a new organization. The integron carried the genes aac7, blaVIM‐14, blaOXA‐20 and aac4 in that order.

Development of a real-time PCR assay for detection and quantification of enterotoxigenic members of Bacillus cereus group in food samples

A highly sensitive real-time PCR (qPCR) procedure, targeting the phosphatidylcholine-specific phospholipase C gene (pc-plc), was developed for specific detection and quantification of strains belonging to Bacillus cereus group. The target region was selected based on the enterotoxigenic profiles of 75 Bacillus strains. The inclusivity and exclusivity of the RTi-PCR assay were assessed with 59 isolates of the B. cereus group, 16 other Bacillus spp., and 4 non-Bacillus strains.
