The Gene-Environment Interactions in Respiratory Diseases (GEIRD) Project.

2009

The role of genetic and environmental factors, as well as their interaction, in the natural history of asthma, allergic rhinitis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is largely unknown. This is mainly due to the lack of large-scale analytical epidemiological/genetic studies aimed at investigating these 3 respiratory conditions simultaneously. The GEIRD project is a collaborative initiative designed to collect information on biomarkers of inflammation and oxidative stress, individual and ecological exposures, diet, early-life factors, smoking habits, genetic traits and medication use in large and accurately defined series of asthma, allergic rhinitis and COPD phenotypes. It is a …

Elevated AA/EPA Ratio Represents an Inflammatory Biomarker in Tumor Tissue of Metastatic Colorectal Cancer Patients

2019

Chronic inflammation increases the risk of developing certain types of cancer, such as colorectal cancer (CRC). The oxidative metabolism of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) has a strong effect on colonic tumorigenesis and the levels of arachidonic acid (AA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) can contribute to the development of an inflammatory microenvironment. Aim of this study was to evaluate the possible differences in the AA/EPA ratio tissue levels between CRC patients with and without synchronous metastases. Moreover, the expression of the most important inflammatory enzymes and mediators, linked with the AA/EPA ratio, have been also assessed. Sixty-eight patients with CRC were enrolle…

Biomarkers and Inflammatory Network in Aging

2014

Abstract Humans are characterized by a large heterogeneity in lifespans. The aging rate, measured as a decline of functional capacity and stress resistance, is different in every individual. Several attempts have been made to define the so-called biological age, but without achieving real success. Biomarkers of aging, which are represented by biological indicators selected using appropriate criteria, should help to characterize the biological age. Since age is a major risk factor in many degenerative diseases, such biomarkers could subsequently be used to identify individuals at a high risk of developing age-associated diseases or disabilities. In this chapter, some inflammatory biomarkers …

Clinical correlates of change in inflammatory biomarkers: The Framingham Heart Study

2013

Objectives: Traditional clinical risk factors are associated with inflammation cross-sectionally, but associations of longitudinal variation in inflammatory biomarkers with corresponding changes in clinical risk factors are incompletely described. We sought to analyze clinical factors associated with change in inflammation in the community. Methods: We studied 3013 Framingham Offspring (n = 2735) and Omni Cohort (n = 278) participants (mean age 59 years, 55% women, 9% ethnic/racial minority) who attended two consecutive examination cycles (mean 6.7 years apart). We selected ten inflammatory biomarkers representing distinctive biological functions: C-reactive protein (CRP), intercellular adhe…

Prognostic role of inflammatory biomarkers from peripheral blood and clinical factors in metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) pati…

2021

e17026 Background: Ra-223 is a treatment option for mCRPC pts with bone metastases according to the survival benefit observed compared to placebo in the ALSYMPCA trial. In the last years, many studies showed this benefit in the real-life pts is lower than that reported in the trial, probably due to a suboptimal selection of pts with poor prognostic characteristics. Therefore, the identification of prognostic factors to select mCRPC pts most likely to benefit from Ra-223 is needed. The multicentre retrospective BIO-Ra-223 study has investigated the prognostic role of peripheral blood immune cells and clinical factors to develop a novel prognostic score for mCRPC pts treated with Ra-223. Analysis of systemic inflammatory biomarkers in neuroendocrine carcinomas of the lung: prognostic and predictive significance of NLR, LDH, ALI, and L…

2020

Background: Lung neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC) is characterized by aggressive clinical behavior and lack of treatment advances. We evaluate the prognostic and the predictive roles of systemic inflammatory biomarkers in patient circulating blood: neutrophil–lymphocyte ratio (NLR), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), advanced lung cancer inflammation index (ALI), and the Lung Immune Prognostic Index (LIPI) score. Methods: A total of 120 patients with small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) ( n = 110) and large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC) ( n = 10) were enrolled. Overall survival (OS) was evaluated by Kaplan–Meier estimator and univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazard analyses were perfor…

C-reactive protein and efficacy of antiplatelet therapy in (intracranial) atherosclerosis

2018

C-reactive protein (CRP) and other inflammatory biomarkers can indicate both the severity and extent of atherosclerosis, reflecting the inflammatory nature of the disease process.1 Atherogenesis begins with an inflammatory response to vascular injury with cells and mediators initiating the healing response and later inducing growth of atherosclerotic plaques. Inflammation then increases plaque instability, promoting rupture, fissuring, or erosion—the pathogenetic milieu of thrombosis in atherothrombotic ischemic strokes.

trans -Lycopene from tomato juice attenuates inflammatory biomarkers in human plasma samples: An intervention trial

2017

cope : To evaluate the effects of carotenoids from tomato juice (TJ) on inflammatory biomarkers, by performing a 4-week dose-response nutritional trial in a population at high cardiovascular risk. Methods and results : An open, prospective, randomized, cross-over, and controlledclinical trial was carried out with 28 volunteers (mean age 69.7 ± 3.1 years; mean BMI 31.5 ± 3.6 kg/m2) at high cardiovascular risk, which were assigned to consume daily for 4 weeks in random order: 200 mL (LD) or 400 mL (HD) of TJ, or water as a control (C), with a 21-day wash-out period between each intervention. Blood samples were collected at baseline (B) and after each intervention. Endpoints included significa…
