Mass Communications as a Vehicle to Lure Russian Émigrés Homeward

2011

After the millions of wartime displaced citizens had been forcibly returned to the Soviet Union after the Second World War, the Soviet Union inaugurated a new type of campaign in the mid-1950s to get all the remaining Soviet citizens and former émigrés from Sovietoccupied areas to migrate back. In this campaign, the Soviets used all the means of mass communication they were able to produce, especially radio combined with the press and direct contact with people. The campaign was not very successful, at least not among the people it was supposed to lure back: people residing in Europe. However, many people, especially from Latin America, migrated back to the Soviet Union, only to be disappoi…

Young People and the Dark Side of Social Media: Possible Threats to National Security

2020

Social media is increasingly becoming a forum for criminality, misuse, and hate speech, as there are no filters or other controlling mechanisms to filter user-generated content.Furthermore, disinformation and propaganda are becoming more sophisticated and harder to track. Hence, this dark side of social media can pose a viable threat to national security. Future generations will be born into an environment of polluted and polarised online information networks. Consequently, young people, many of whom use social media on a daily basis, will have to find ways to survive in these circumstances, often without the help, knowledge, or experience of earlier generations. Thus, young people are at ri…

Experimental Quantum Probing Measurements With No Knowledge on the System-Probe Interaction

2020

In any natural science, measurements are the essential link between theory and observable reality. Is it possible to obtain accurate and relevant information via measurement whose action on the probed system is unknown? In other words, can one be convinced to know something about the nature without knowing in detail how the information was obtained? In this paper, we show that the answer is surprisingly, yes. We construct and experimentally implement a quantum optical probing measurement where measurements on the probes, the photons' polarization states, are used to extract information on the systems, the frequency spectra of the same photons. Unlike the pre-existing probing protocols, our …

Mechanical entanglement detection in an optomechanical system

2017

We propose here a setup to generate and evaluate the entanglement between two mechanical resonators in a cavity optomechanical setting. As in previous proposals, our scheme includes two driving pumps allowing for the generation of two-mode mechanical squeezing. In addition, we include here four additional probing tones, which allow for the separate evaluation of the collective mechanical quadratures required to estimate the Duan quantity, thus allowing us to infer whether the mechanical resonators are entangled.

Experimental realization of high-fidelity teleportation via a non-Markovian open quantum system

2020

Open quantum systems and study of decoherence are important for our fundamental understanding of quantum physical phenomena. For practical purposes, a large number of quantum protocols exist that exploit quantum resources, e.g., entanglement, which allows us to go beyond what is possible to achieve by classical means. We combine concepts from open quantum systems and quantum information science and give a proof-of-principle experimental demonstration-with teleportation-that it is possible to implement efficiently a quantum protocol via a non-Markovian open system. The results show that, at the time of implementation of the protocol, it is not necessary to have the quantum resource in the de…

Rhizomatic Target Audiences of the Cyber Domain

2016

Target Audience Analysis (TAA) is a process of finding suitable target audiences for psychological operations (PSYOPS). Typically, a TAA is a one-way process with some kind of a feedback system. The cyber domain presents a challenge to this type of sequential, linear process by refusing to stay still while the process is being executed, possibly leading to results from yesterday’s data in an environment that no longer exists today. Another challenge is that identifiable human beings—the traditional targets of PSYOPS—are not the only inhabitants of the cyber domain. Physical devices, nicknames, IP addresses, networks, and a vast amount of data populate this environment, in which there are no…

Cyber warfare : the game changer in the battlespace

2022

A recent development in warfare has been the integration of Electronic Warfare (EW), Information Warfare (IW) and Cyber Warfare (CW) systems designed to generate non-kinetic effects in battle space together with the traditional use of kinetic weapons. These new capacities of armed forces create new possibilities to achieve the goals of war. These advanced and new capabilities form a whole new non-kinetic environment in which they have become a game changer in battle space. This article focuses on describing cyber warfare and the first experiences of the war in Ukraine. nonPeerReviewed
