Wavelet analysis and neural network classifiers to detect mid-sagittal sections for nuchal translucency measurement

We propose a methodology to support the physician in the automatic identification of mid-sagittal sections of the fetus in ultrasound videos acquired during the first trimester of pregnancy. A good mid-sagittal section is a key requirement to make the correct measurement of nuchal translucency which is one of the main marker for screening of chromosomal defects such as trisomy 13, 18 and 21. NT measurement is beyond the scope of this article. Comparison of stereo vision techniques for cloud-top height retrieval

This paper presents an ongoing study for the estimation of the cloud-top height by using only geometrical methods. In agreement with some recent studies showing that it is possible to achieve reliable height estimations not only with the classical methods based on radiative transfer, this article includes a comparison of performances of a selected set of vision algorithms devoted to extract dense disparity maps or motion fields from Infra Red stereo image pairs. Abstract Embodied sound design is a process of sound creation that involves the designer’s vocal apparatus and gestures. The possibilities of vocal sketching were investigated by means of an art installation. An artist–designer interpreted several vocal self-portraits and rendered the corresponding synthetic sketches by using physics-based and concatenative sound synthesis. Both synthesis techniques afforded a broad range of artificial sound objects, from concrete to abstract, all derived from natural vocalisations. A new Multi-Layers Method to Analyze Gene Expression

In the paper a new Multi-Layers approach (called Multi-Layers Model MLM) for the analysis of stochastic signals and its application to the analysis of gene expression data is presented. It consists in the generation of sub-samples from the input signal by applying a threshold technique based on cut-set optimal conditions. The MLM has been applied on synthetic and real microarray data for the identification of particular regions across DNA called nucleosomes and linkers. An Empirical Mode Decomposition Approach to Assess the Strength of Heart Period-Systolic Arterial Pressure Variability Interactions.

This work proposes an empirical mode decomposition (EMD) method to assess the strength of the interactions between heart period (HP) and systolic arterial pressure (SAP) variability. EMD was exploited to decompose the original series (OR) into its first, and fastest, intrinsic mode function (IMF1) and the residual (RES) computed by subtracting the IMF1 from OR. EMD procedure was applied to both HP and SAP variability series. Network of Concepts and Ideas

We present the results of an experiment designed to investigate the way information is organized and stored in the human brain. In particular, we are using controlled stimuli to reverse engineer the networks of ideas and concepts in order to answer the following questions. (1) Are the networks of ideas and concepts in the human brain invoked by verbal and visual stimuli distinct from each other? The answer appears to be no for the network of ideas and inconclusive for the network of concepts. (2) What is the topology of these networks? Our experimental results show that both are small-world networks, with the network of ideas being random and the network of concepts scale-free.

The stability problem and noisy projections in discrete tomography

Abstract The new field of research of discrete tomography will be described in this paper. It differs from standard computerized tomography in the reduced number of projections. It needs ad hoc algorithms which usually are based on the definition of the model of the object to reconstruct.
