Discriminating Graph Pattern Miningfrom Gene Expression Data
2016
We consider the problem of mining gene expression data in order to single out interesting features characterizing healthy/unhealthy samples of an input dataset. We present an approach based on a network model of the input gene expression data, where there is a labelled graph for each sample. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to build a different graph for each sample and, then, to have a database of graphs for representing a sample set. Our main goal is that of singling out interesting differences between healthy and unhealthy samples, through the extraction of "discriminative patterns" among graphs belonging to the two different sample sets. Differently from the other…
Knowledge Extraction from Biological and Social Graphs
2022
Many problems from the real life deal with the generation of enormous, varied, dynamic, and interconnected datasets coming from different and heterogeneous sources. This PhD Thesis focuses on the proposal of novel knowledge extraction techniques from graphs, mainly based on Big Data methodologies. Two application contexts are considered: Biological and Medical data, with the final aim of identifying biomarkers for diagnosis, treatment, prognosis, and prevention of diseases. Social data, for the optimization of advertising campaigns, the comparison of user profiles, and neighborhood analysis.

A Non-Parametric Parallel Harris-Affine Detector
2009
This paper describes a parallel version of a new automatic Harris-based corner detector. A simple but effective client-server based scheduler has been implemented in order to dynamically distribute the workload on heterogeneous parallel architectures such as Grid systems. Results obtained on the COMETA Grid show the effectiveness and the robustness of the proposed approach.
Designing for Mixed Reality Urban Exploration

Funding Information: Acknowledgments. This work was supported by the European Union Seventh Framework Programme (grant agreement no 601139) and the Italian Ministry of Education, University, and Research (MIUR) PON AIM project (id: AIM1875400-1, CUP: B74I18000210006). Publisher Copyright: © 2021. All Rights Reserved. This paper introduces a design framework for mixed reality urban exploration (MRUE), based on a concrete implementation in a historical city. The framework integrates different modalities, such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and haptics-audio interfaces, as well as advanced features such as personalized recommendations, social exploration, and itinerary manage…

Strings (aka sequences or words) form the most basic and natural data structure. They occur whenever information is electronically transmitted (as bit streams), when natural language text is spoken or written down (as words over, for example, the Latin alphabet), in the process of heredity transmission in living cells (through DNA sequences) or the protein synthesis (assequence of amino acids), and in many more different contexts
