Streams as Seams: Carving trajectories out of the time-frequency matrix

2020

A time-frequency representation of sound is commonly obtained through the Short-Time Fourier Transform. Identifying and extracting the prominent frequency components of the spectrogram is important for sinusoidal modeling and sound processing. Borrowing a known image processing technique, known as seam carving, we propose an algorithm to track and extract the sinusoidal components from the sound spectrogram. Experiments show how this technique is well suited for sound whose prominent frequency components vary both in amplitude and in frequency. Moreover, seam carving naturally produces some auditory continuity effects. We compare this algorithm with two other sine extraction techniques, bas…

A Transputer-Based System for Multi-Stroke Character Recognition

1992

A multi-stroke handwritten character recognition system is presented in this paper. A suitable set of Fourier Descriptors is used as features set to describe each stroke. A man-machine interactive algorithm was utilized to accomplish the learning phase and to recognize unknown samples. A PC based prototype was realized at first to test the system. In order to speed up the recognition process, the design and a first prototype of a Transputer-based system have been realized too. Some preliminary experimental results obtained applying these machines to handwritten numerals are reported in the paper.

Immersive Virtual Reality for Cultural Heritage Exploration

2023

Virtual Reality can provide an immersive experience that allows cultural heritage to be experienced in a more realistic and immersive way than traditional showcasing techniques. The objective of this paper is to provide a software pipeline that can be adopted for the realization of immersive experiences in cultural heritage sites. This work has been realized within the 3DLab-Sicilia project, which includes the realization of immersive virtual tours of UNESCO World Heritage sites located in the Sicily area (Italy).

Restoration of Vertical Line Scratches with a Distributed Genetic Algorithm

2006

This contribution approaches the problem of scratch restoration in old movies as a optimisation's problem. The functional based on the statistical properties of the image around the scratch is optimised using an ad-hoc genetic algorithm. Given the large amount of the computational time needed by genetic algorithms, a network of standard workstations with heterogeneous operating systems has been used. Each workstation in the network works on each scratch to perform the restoration, and a specific machine works as root node with the task of distributing jobs on the network and adding the outputted restored scratches back into the image.

Improving Harris corner selection strategy

2011

This study describes a corner selection strategy based on the Harris approach. Corners are usually defined as interest points for which intensity variation in the principal directions is locally maximised, as response from a filter given by the linear combination of the determinant and the trace of the autocorrelation matrix. The Harris corner detector, in its original definition, is only rotationally invariant, but scale-invariant and affine-covariant extensions have been developed. As one of the main drawbacks, corner detector performances are influenced by two user-given parameters: the linear combination coefficient and the response filter threshold. The main idea of the authors' approa…

Graph Comparison and Artificial Models for Simulating Real Criminal Networks

2021

Network Science is an active research field, with numerous applications in areas like computer science, economics, or sociology. Criminal networks, in particular, possess specific topologies which allow them to exhibit strong resilience to disruption. Starting from a dataset related to meetings between members of a Mafia organization which operated in Sicily during 2000s, we here aim to create artificial models with similar properties. To this end, we use specific tools of Social Network Analysis, including network models (Barabási-Albert identified to be the most promising) and metrics which allow us to quantify the similarity between two networks. To the best of our knowledge, the DeltaCo…
