La difesa Siciliana in una prospettiva digitale (XVI – XVIII sec.)

2017

Hegel’s Conceptual Group Action on Creative Dynamics in Music

2014

The present paper presents a mechanism to catalyze that crucial step in a creative process, where the critical concept’s “walls” (referring to the common “box” metaphor) are identified and opened. We propose a concrete, but generic body of six concepts and the action of a group of transformations of this body, a toolbox that should offer a set of operational perspectives onto the critical concept’s walls. The conceptual body and the group action are deduced from the first paragraphs of Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel’s Wissenschaft der Logik. On this body, a group, called the “Hegel group”, acts and reflects some of the relations and operations that are hidden in Hegel’s text. We then identif…

An Original Convolution Model to analyze Graph Network Distribution Features

2022

Modern Graph Theory is a newly emerging field that involves all of those approaches that study graphs differently from Classic Graph Theory. The main difference between Classic and Modern Graph Theory regards the analysis and the use of graph's structures (micro/macro). The former aims to solve tasks hosted on graph nodes, most of the time with no insight into the global graph structure, the latter aims to analyze and discover the most salient features characterizing a whole network of each graph, like degree distributions, hubs, clustering coefficient and network motifs. The activities carried out during the PhD period concerned, after a careful preliminary study on the applications of the…

Soft Topographic Map for Clustering and Classification of Bacteria

2007

In this work a new method for clustering and building a topographic representation of a bacteria taxonomy is presented. The method is based on the analysis of stable parts of the genome, the so-called “housekeeping genes”. The proposed method generates topographic maps of the bacteria taxonomy, where relations among different type strains can be visually inspected and verified. Two well known DNA alignement algorithms are applied to the genomic sequences. Topographic maps are optimized to represent the similarity among the sequences according to their evolutionary distances. The experimental analysis is carried out on 147 type strains of the Gammaprotebacteria class by means of the 16S rRNA…

Distance Measures for Portfolio Selection

2017

The classical Markowitz approach to the portfolio selection problem (PSP) consists of selecting the portfolio that minimises the return variance for a given level of expected return. By solving the problem for different values of this expected return we obtain the Pareto efficient frontier, which is composed of non-dominated portfolios. The final user has to discriminate amongst these points by resorting to an external criterion in order to decide which portfolio to invest in. We propose to define an external portfolio that corresponds to a desired criterion, and to assess its distance from the Markowitz frontier in market allowing for short-sellings or not. We show that this distance is ab…
