Rotationally symmetric 1-harmonic flows from D2 TO S 2: Local well-posedness and finite time blowup

The 1-harmonic flow from the disk to the sphere with constant Dirichlet boundary conditions is analyzed in the case of rotational symmetry. Sufficient conditions on the initial datum are given, such that a unique classical solution exists for short times. Also, a sharp criterion on the boundary condition is identified, such that any classical solution will blow up in finite time. Finally, nongeneric examples of finite time blowup are exhibited for any boundary condition.

Effect of Ligands on HP-Induced Unfolding and Oligomerization of β-Lactoglobulin

ABSTRACTTo probe intermediate states during unfolding and oligomerization of proteins remains a major challenge. High pressure (HP) is a powerful tool for studying these problems, revealing subtle structural changes in proteins not accessible by other means of denaturation. Bovine β-lactoglobulin (BLG), the main whey protein, has a strong propensity to bind various bioactive molecules, such as retinol and resveratrol, two ligands with different affinity and binding sites. Double point curves for corank 2 map germs from C2 to C3

AbstractWe characterize finite determinacy of map germs f:(C2,0)→(C3,0) in terms of the Milnor number μ(D(f)) of the double point curve D(f) in (C2,0) and we provide an explicit description of the double point scheme in terms of elementary symmetric functions. Also we prove that the Whitney equisingularity of 1-parameter families of map germs ft:(C2,0)→(C3,0) is equivalent to the constancy of both μ(D(ft)) and μ(ft(C2)∩H) with respect to t, where H⊂C3 is a generic plane.

Influence of Soil Salinity on Sensory Characteristics and Volatile Aroma Compounds of Nero d’Avola Wine

The influence of soil salinity on the chemical composition, volatile aromatic compounds, and sensory characteristics of Nero d'Avola wine was examined. Data on vineyard productivity, such as grape yield, are also reported. Physicochemical parameters were determined on the samples analyzed. Solid-phase microextraction was used for the extraction of aromatic volatile compounds, followed by capillary gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Sensory analyses were performed by visual inspection, smelling, and tasting. Bio-inspired consolidants derived from crystalline nanocellulose for decayed wood

Abstract Novel bio-inspired materials derived from crystalline nanocellulose (CNC) have been tested as wood consolidants. A suspension of CNC, produced by acid hydrolysis of cellulose and used as such or mixed with lignin and/or siloxane derivatives (PDMS), was applied on rotted wood samples of Norway spruce. X-Ray diffraction analysis on CNC powder showed high crystallinity index. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurement indicated a nearly uniform particle size distribution with an average hydrodynamic diameter for pure CNC smaller than that in the mixtures. This introductory chapter describes the fundamentals for later analysis, modeling and discussion of choice tasks and behavior. Figure 2.1 depicts the basic elements of the choice process which are relevant for the present work. On the left hand side, we see the general problem the decision makers are faced with: the choice task. Generally speaking, a choice task defines the problem of choosing the preferred out of a discrete and finite set of alternatives. The decision makers’ preferences determine what the preferred alternative is. Thus, in Sect. 2.1, we define both choice tasks and preferences.

Kirkwood-Buff integrals from molecular simulation

The Kirkwood-Buff (KB) theory provides a rigorous framework to predict thermodynamic properties of isotropic liquids from the microscopic structure. Several thermodynamic quantities relate to KB integrals, such as partial molar volumes. KB integrals are expressed as integrals of RDFs over volume but can also be obtained from density fluctuations in the grand-canonical ensemble. Various methods have been proposed to estimate KB integrals from molecular simulation.
