POSITIVE DEFINITE FUNCTIONS OF DIAGONAL LIMITS OF FINITE ALTERNATING GROUPS

2004

The normalized positive definite class functions are determined for all those direct limits of finite alternating groups for which the embeddings are natural in the sense that every non-trivial -orbit in is natural.

A class of unitals of order q which can be embedded in two different planes of order q2

1987

By deriving the desarguesian plane of order q2 for every prime power q a unital of order q is constructed which can be embedded in both the Hall plane and the dual of the Hall plane of order q2 which are non-isomorphic projective planes. The representation of translation planes in the fourdimensional projective space of J. Andre and F. Buekenhouts construction of unitals in these planes are used. It is shown that the full automorphism groups of these unitals are just the collineation groups inherited from the classical unitals.

Tensor product characterizations of mixed intersections of non quasianalytic classes and kernel theorems

2009

Mixed intersections of non quasi-analytic classes have been studied in [12]. Here we obtain tensor product representations of these spaces that lead to kernel theorems as well as to tensor product representations of intersections of non quasi-analytic classes on product of open or of compact sets (© 2009 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Sui gruppi unitari finitari e sulla congettura di dieudonné

1996

In this paper we consider some questions concerning unitary spaces (V, h), even though (V, h) is not finitely generated.

Blocks with 𝑝-power character degrees

2005

Let B B be a p p -block of a finite group G G . If χ ( 1 ) \chi (1) is a p p -power for all χ ∈ Irr ⁡ ( B ) \chi \in \operatorname {Irr}(B) , then B B is nilpotent.

Fuzzy algebras as a framework for fuzzy topology

2011

The paper introduces a variety-based version of the notion of the (L,M)-fuzzy topological space of Kubiak and Sostak and embeds the respective category into a suitable modification of the category of topological systems of Vickers. The new concepts provide a common framework for different approaches to fuzzy topology and topological systems existing in the literature, paving the way for studying the problem of interweaving algebra and topology in mathematics, which was raised by Denniston, Melton and Rodabaugh in their recent research on variable-basis topological systems over the category of locales.

Nondivisibility among character degrees II: Nonsolvable groups

2007

We say that a finite group G is an NDAD-group (no divisibility among degrees) if for any 1 < a < b in the set of degrees of the complex irreducible characters of G, a does not divide b. In this article, we determine the nonsolvable NDAD-groups. Together with the work of Lewis, Moreto and Wolf (J. Group Theory 8 (2005)), this settles a problem raised by Berkovich and Zhmud’, which asks for a classification of the NDAD-groups.

Confined subgroups in periodic simple finitary linear groups

2002

A subgroupX of the locally finite groupG is said to beconfined, if there exists a finite subgroupF≤G such thatX g∩F≠1 for allg∈G. Since there seems to be a certain correspondence between proper confined subgroups inG and non-trivial ideals in the complex group algebra ℂG, we determine the confined subgroups of periodic simple finitary linear groups in this paper.

Algebraic Results on Quantum Automata

2004

We use tools from the algebraic theory of automata to investigate the class of languages recognized by two models of Quantum Finite Automata (QFA): Brodsky and Pippenger’s end-decisive model, and a new QFA model whose definition is motivated by implementations of quantum computers using nucleo-magnetic resonance (NMR). In particular, we are interested in the new model since nucleo-magnetic resonance was used to construct the most powerful physical quantum machine to date. We give a complete characterization of the languages recognized by the new model and by Boolean combinations of the Brodsky-Pippenger model. Our results show a striking similarity in the class of languages recognized by th…
