SMOS REFLEX 2003: L-band emissivity characterization of vineyards

The goal of the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity mission over land is to infer surface soil moisture from multiangular L-band radiometric measurements. As the canopy affects the microwave emission of land, it is necessary to characterize different vegetation layers. This paper presents the Reference Pixel L-Band Experiment (REFLEX), carried out in June-July 2003 at the Vale/spl grave/ncia Anchor Station, Spain, to study the effects of grapevines on the soil emission and on the soil moisture retrieval. Numerical and experimental verification of a technique for locating a fatigue crack on beams vibrating under Gaussian excitation

The stationary vibrations of a beam excited by Gaussian noise are strongly affected by the presence of a fatigue crack. Indeed, as soon as the crack arises the system response becomes non-linear due to crack breathing and a non-Gaussian behaviour is encountered. The paper presents both numerical and experimental investigations in order to assess the capability of the non-Gaussianity measures to detect crack presence and position. Monte Carlo method is applied to evaluate in time domain the higher order statistics of a cantilever beam modelled by finite elements. Effects of finite thickness on interfacial widths in confined thin films of coexisting phases

The capillary broadening of a 2-phase interface is investigated both experimentally and theoretically. When a binary mixture in a thin film with thickness D segregates into two coexisting phases the interface between the two phases may form parallel to the substrate due to preferential surface attraction of one of the components. We show that the interfacial profile (of intrinsic width w0) is broadened due to capillary waves, which lead to fluctuations, of correlation length of the local interface positions in the directions parallel to the confining walls. On the Determinants of the Going Public Decision in Spain

Though the going public decision has been addressed by several theories, empirical research is particularly scarce to European countries. This is the first research in the Spanish market that investigates ex ante and ex post characteristics of IPO firms, using a large database of private held firms that potentially may go public. Some of our results are consistent with previous studies. Our evidence suggests that firms that go public are young firms with large capital expenditures previously to the IPO. Novel examples of the N-methyl effect on cyclisations of N-Boc derivatives of amino alcohols. A theoretical study

New examples of the N-methyl effect on the cyclisation of N-tert-butoxycarbonyl derivatives of amino alcohols are reported. Ab initio studies for the displacement step with formation of the five-membered heterocycle indicate that the increase of the nucleophile character of the carbonyl oxygen of the carbamate group with the N-methyl substitution is responsible for the acceleration of the cyclisation step.

Microtomographic Quantification of Hydraulic Clay Mineral Displacement Effects During a CO2 Sequestration Experiment with Saline Aquifer Sandstone

We combined a noninvasive tomographic imaging technique with an invasive open-system core-flooding experiment and compared the results of the pre- and postflooded states of an experimental sandstone core sample from an ongoing field trial for carbon dioxide geosequestration. For the experiment, a rock core sample of 80 mL volume was taken from the 629 m Stuttgart Formation storage domain of a saline sandstone aquifer at the CCS research pilot plant Ketzin, Germany.
