Fitness and lean mass increases during combined training independent of loading order.
2014
Although the benefits of combined endurance (E) and strength (S) training for the development of physical fitness and health are well known, scientific examination of the effect of loading order when E and S are combined into the same training session (E+S vs S+E) is rare. This study investigated the effects of moderate frequency E+S versus S+E training on physical fitness, body composition, and blood lipids.Physically active and healthy young men performed E+S (n = 16) or S+E (n = 18) training 2-3 times a week for 24 wk. Endurance (by incremental bike test) and strength (by dynamic leg press) performance as well as body composition (by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry), muscle cross-sectio…
Mortality in the first 30 days following incident acute symptomatic seizures.
2005
Purpose: Very little is known about short-term mortality after acute symptomatic seizure. One study found an increased mortality in the first year after acute symptomatic seizure, like mortality following acute symptomatic status epilepticus. Methods: We studied mortality in the first 30 days after an acute symptomatic seizure in two cohorts. In Washington Heights, New York City, we reviewed the medical records of all adults aged 20 years and older seen at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center from January 1, 1990 through December 13, 1994 to identify incident acute symptomatic seizure. In Rochester, Minnesota, the medical records of all Rochester residents were reviewed to identify incident…
The treatment of wrist fractures with Epibloc System
2011
BACKGROUND Fractures of the distal extremity of the radius are the most common bone lesions of the superior extremity of the body, representing 17% of the fractures treated in First Aid facilities. The restoration of anatomical relationships in the radiocarpal joint is considered to be a prerequisite for good functional recovery. There are numerous methods of treatment of these fractures. The Epibloc system is a percutaneous endomedullary synthesis alternative to the plaster cast in wrist fracture treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS The authors describe their experience with 81 fractures (63 type A2-3 fractures and 18 type C1) of the wrist treated with the Epibloc System (ES). The results were…
A confirmatory factor analytic validation of the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory
2015
Abstract Objective Because the postulated three-factor structure of the internationally widely used Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) has not been confirmed yet by a confirmatory factor analytic approach this was the central aim of the current study. Methods From a clinical setting, N = 373 patients with chronic tinnitus completed the THI and further questionnaires assessing tinnitus-related and psychological variables. In order to analyze the psychometric properties of the THI, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and correlational analyses were conducted. Results CFA provided a statistically significant support for a better fit of the data to the hypothesized three-factor structure ( RMSEA…
Female obesity impairs in vitro fertilization outcome without affecting embryo quality.
2008
Objective To compare embryo quality and reproductive outcome in our IVF program according to the women's body mass index (BMI). Design Retrospective study. Setting University-affiliated infertility clinic, between January 2001 and April 2007. Patient(s) Women undergoing a total of 6,500 IVF–intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) cycles. Intervention(s) Six thousand five hundred IVF-ICSI cycles were included and divided into four groups: lean ( 2 ; n=1,070; 16.5%); normal (20–24.9 kg/m 2 ; n=3,930; 60.5%); overweight (25–29.9 kg/m 2 ; n=1,081; 16.6%); and obese (≥30 kg/m 2 ; n=419; 6.4%). Main Outcome Measure(s) Comparison of embryo quality and reproductive outcome (implantation, pregnancy,…
Clinical verification of a unilateral otolith test.
1992
Abstract In a previous study13 we reported promising results for a new test to differentiate in vivo unilateral otolith functions. That study pointed to a need for further validation on known pathological cases. In this presentation we will detail the results gathered on a group of clinically verified vestibular defectives (verum) and a normal (control) group. The subjects in the verum group were former patients of the ENT clinic of the university hospital. These subjects had usually suffered from neurinoma of the VIIth cranial nerve or inner ear infections. All had required surgical intervention including removal of the vestibular system. The patients were contacted usually two or more yea…
DPOAE‐Grams in Patients with Acute Tonal Tinnitus
2005
To investigate cochlear outer hair cell function in patients with acute tonal tinnitus and normal or near-normal hearing threshold.Prospective controlled study in an academic tertiary health center. Distortion products of otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE)-grams of 32 ears with acute tonal tinnitus and normal hearing or minimal hearing loss were compared with those of 17 healthy nontinnitus ears.Tinnitus ears exhibited relatively increased amplitudes of DPOAE at high frequencies (4-6.3 kHz) when compared with the group of healthy ears and relatively decreased DPOAE amplitudes at middle frequencies (1650-2400 Hz). Statistically significant ( P0.01) increased mean values of DPOAE amplitudes were o…
[Clinical and radiological evolution of a group of untreated acoustic neuromas].
2013
Abstract Introduction The acoustic neuroma is a benign tumour that originates in the vestibular branch of the eighth cranial nerve. The main treatment is surgery, but many authors suggest that with elderly patients or in small neuromas we can opt for watchful waiting. Methods This was a retrospective study from 2007 to 2013 that included 27 patients diagnosed of acoustic neuroma that had not been treated due to the size of the tumour, age and comorbidities, or by patient choice. We evaluated overall condition, hearing thresholds, degree of canal paresis and central disorders. Results After 6 years of follow up, clinical manifestations of 18 patients remained unchanged, 5 patients underwent …
Clinical observations and risk factors for tinnitus in a Sicilian cohort.
2014
The aims of this study were to determine the distribution of risk factors associated with tinnitus analysing their role in the development of tinnitus and the effects of their interaction; to evidence the importance of a suitable and adequate clinical and audiologic assessment to avoid those modifiable risk factors responsible for cochlear dysfunction and tinnitus onset. 46 subjects with tinnitus and 74 controls were studied according to: age, sex, Body Mass Index (BMI), neck circumference, tobacco smoking, feeling fatigue or headache, self reporting snoring, hypertension, diabetes, coronary heart disease, and/or hyperlipidemia, and laboratory finding as lipid profile and levels of reactive…
Reduced right atrial contractile force in patients with left ventricular diastolic dysfunction: A study in human atrial fibers—contractile force and …
2017
Summary Background/Objective The aim of our study was to evaluate right heart contractile force in patients with diastolic dysfunction (DD) with preserved left heart ejection fraction undergoing cardiac surgery. We examined the contractile properties of skinned human fibers obtained from the right auricle in two groups (DD and controls). Methods Right atrial tissue from 64 patients, who were undergoing cardiac surgery, were collected before extracorporal circulation. Tissue was conserved and prepared as "skinned fibers". We exposed the dissected fibers to increasing calcium concentrations and recorded the force values. Results Patients with DD develop significantly less force at middle and …
