Treatment with phenoxybenzamine of upper urinary tract complications caused by intravesical obstruction.

Five children in whom reflux and progressive hydronephrosis persisted despite multiple surgical attempts or repair are described. In all cases cystomanometry displayed a marked elevation of the bladder outlet resistance combined with high intravesical pressure values. Therapy with phenoxybenzamine, an alpha-adrenergic blocker, was successful in all cases, restoring a free urine passage of the upper urinary tract and unimpaired voiding preventing urinary diversion which has been considered in some of these children. Although there were no signs of bladder neuropathy, a hyperfunction of the sympathetic innervation as acause for bladder complications is discussed.

Intense noise exposure and the application of ototoxic substances result in increased levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS), such as nitric oxide (NO). In order to reduce the free NO concentration in the inner ear under pathological conditions, the use of natural cytoprotective substances such as 17β-estradiol is a promising therapeutic concept. Background. Large full-thickness defects of the lower lip need free tissue transfer. The free forearm flap is the more widespread technique for free flap lower lip reconstruction, but it results in a static lip. The authors describe a technique of morphodynamic sensate reconstruction of the lower lip with a free gracilis flap and a musculomucosal flap. Methods. However, even in the case of low-dose intratympanic application, gentamicin might contribute to a pathological NO-increase leading to cochlear damage and hearing impairment. A 72-year-old man with the third recurrence of a low-grade liposarcoma of the right lower leg came to our attention seeking limb-salvage surgery. The tumour was removed en bloc with all the superficial posterior compartment of the leg. Appropriate foot flexion was restored by means of a free-functional rectus femoris musculocutaneous flap harvested from the ipsilateral thigh. The patient was kept on a postoperative splint for 6 weeks. Three months after the operation, clinical and elecromyographic signs of reinnervation were observed. Abstract The mirror test is a well-known task in Robotics. The existing strategies are based on kinesthetic-visual matching techniques and manipulate perceptual and motion data. The proposed work attempts to demonstrate that it is possible to implement a robust robotic self-recognition method by the inner speech, i.e. the self-dialogue that enables reasoning on symbolic information. The robot self-talks and conceptually reasons on the symbolic forms of signals, and infers if the robot it sees in the mirror is itself or not. Mechanical behavior of a sandwich with corrugated GRP core: numerical modeling and experimental validation

In this work the mechanical behaviour of a core reinforced composite sandwich structure is studied. The sandwich employs a Glass Reinforced Polymer (GRP) orthotropic material for both the two external skins and the inner core web. In particular, the core is designed in order to cooperate with the GRP skins in membrane and flexural properties by means of the addition of a corrugated laminate into the foam core. Aluminum-lithium clusters: First-principles simulation of geometries and electronic properties

The geometries and electronic properties of small lithium-rich ${\mathrm{Al}}_{N}{\mathrm{Li}}_{5N}$ $(N=1--6,10)$ clusters are studied using first-principles simulations. Aluminum ions form a compact inner core configuration in the clusters that changes into a chainlike skeleton embedded in a lithium surrounding as the cluster size increases. This behavior restricts $s\ensuremath{-}p$ hybridization effects and causes separate s and p bands in the electronic energy spectrum. A significant charge transfer from Li ions and nearby Al ions strengthens ionic Al-Li bonds, while Al-Al bonds gain a more covalent nature. The flow and turbulence fields in a fully baffled vessel stirred by a Rushton turbine have been simulated by means of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques. The simulation techniques adopted (the "Sliding-grid" and "Inner-outer" methods) are fully predictive and require no experimental data as boundary or initial conditions. The effect of clearance (C) on the flow patterns in stirred vessels was simulated as the flow field transition observed can be considered a particularly stringent benchmark for the testing of CFD techniques.
