Amidino substituted 2-aminophenols: biologically important building blocks for the amidino-functionalization of 2-substituted benzoxazoles

Unlike the closely related and widely investigated amidino-substituted benzimidazoles and benzothiazoles with a range of demonstrated biological activities, the matching benzoxazole analogues still remain a largely understudied and not systematically evaluated class of compounds. Distant downstream sequence determinants can control N-tail translocation during protein insertion into the endoplasmic reticulum membrane.

We have studied the membrane insertion of ProW, an Escherichia coli inner membrane protein with seven transmembrane segments and a large periplasmic N-terminal tail, into endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-derived dog pancreas microsomes. Strikingly, significant levels of N-tail translocation is seen only when a minimum of four of the transmembrane segments are present; for constructs with fewer transmembrane segments, the N-tail remains mostly nontranslocated and the majority of the molecules adopt an 'inverted' topology where normally nontranslocated parts are translocated and vice versa. Crystal structure of the N-terminal domain of the major virulence factor BB0323 from the Lyme disease agent Borrelia burgdorferi.

Lyme disease is an infection caused by the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi after it is transmitted to a mammalian organism during a tick blood meal. B. burgdorferi encodes at least 140 lipoproteins located on the outer or inner membrane, thus facing the surroundings or the periplasmic space, respectively. However, most of the predicted lipoproteins are of unknown function, and only a few proteins are known to be essential for the persistence and virulence of the pathogen. Closed injective ideals of multilinear operators, related measures and interpolation

[EN] We introduce and discuss several ways of extending the inner measure arisen from the closed injective hull of an ideal of linear operators to the multilinear case. In particular, we consider new measures that allow to characterize the operators that belong to a closed injective ideal of multilinear operators as those having measure equal to zero. Some interpolation formulas for these measures, and consequently interpolation results involving ideals of multilinear operators, are established. Examples and applications related to summing multilinear operators are also shown.

Biomolecular conjugation inside synthetic polymer nanopores via glycoprotein-lectin interactions

We demonstrate the supramolecular bioconjugation of concanavalin A (Con A) protein with glycoenzyme horseradish peroxidase (HRP) inside single nanopores, fabricated in heavy ion tracked polymer membranes. Firstly, the HRP-enzyme was covalently immobilized on the inner wall of the pores using carbodiimide coupling chemistry. The immobilized HRP-enzyme molecules bear sugar (mannose) groups available for the binding of Con A protein. Divergent distribution of cytoglobin and neuroglobin in the murine eye

Neuroglobin (Ngb) and cytoglobin (Cygb) are two vertebrate globins with yet poorly defined functions. Previous studies had demonstrated a high expression level of neuroglobin in the mammalian retina, being in line with a respiratory function. Here we show that in the mouse eye, cytoglobin is localised in fibroblasts of the ciliary processes and the choroidea. In the neuronal retina, cytoglobin is expressed in a subset of neurons of the ganglion cell and inner nuclear layers. COX-2 expression in the guinea pig cochlea is partly altered by moderate sound exposure.

The cyclooxygenase-2 isoform (COX-2) was found recently to be constitutively expressed in the guinea pig inner ear. To gain knowledge about its role in sound perception, alterations in the COX-2 level of moderate noise-stimulated cochleae were determined. Staining intensities were quantified in different regions using an immunohistochemical staining procedure and computer-assisted system. After 70 dB and 90 dB noise exposure for 1 h at 8000 Hz, COX-2 downregulation was observed in the organ of Corti, which was most prominent in Deiters' cells near Hensen cells and outer hair cells. About entangled networks of worm-like micelles: a rejected hypothesis

We report new results from small-angle neutron scattering on d(1 2)-cyclohexane/lecithin/water micellar solutions performed as a function of the water content (w(o)), temperature (T) and dispersed phase volume fraction (phi). The data from dilute samples are interpretable in terms of the existence of giant cylindrical reverse micelles and are well fit with a core-shell model (that provides the micelle structure and dimensions) with values of 28 and 45 Angstrom for the inner core and the outer shell radii, almost independent on temperature and concentration.
