Patologie rare dell'orecchio

2012

After fifty years of experience, mostly spent in ENT surgery at the University of Palermo, I have pleasure in presenting this Atlas of rare diseases of the ear, including clinical cases observed and documented during this long period from 1958 to 2006. We would prefer to divide all the case studies into three chapters: the outer ear, middle ear and inner ear.

The Emergence of Women as Main Earners in Europe

2014

This paper conducts a cross-sectional empirical research aimed at documenting the emergence of a new family model characterized by women who earn the largest share of their household income. We show that in Europe, couples with women as the main earner have started to represent a non-negligible share of the population and identify the key characteristics of couples in which women are the main earner in comparison to equal-earner couples and to couples in which men are the main earner. We undertake a comparative approach using micro-level data from the European Social Survey on 19 countries and two time periods (2004 and 2010).

Narrare la generatività familiare

2018

The author proposes a short reflection on the training of the emotional system of the subject; that is a pedagogically relevant theme because it allows to comprehend the first emotional literacy that happens in family. It also helps to explore the…

Study of Bacillus subtilis spore's : characterication of stuctures implied in its resistance

2013

The bacterial spore is a multilayer microbial form which is extremely resistant to environmental perturbations. This resistance is especially due to its unique structure which is particularly compact and weakly permeable. This work aims to identify and characterize the spore structures involved in these properties. Overall investigation methods, such as NMR and fluorescence anisotropy, have shown that the cortex of Bacillus subtilis spores is modified by temperature for level similar to that of the activation of germination. This will result in changes to the access to the inner membrane. A tool at the spore’s scale, the fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) in conjunction with th…

Partial inner product spaces, metric operators and generalized hermiticity

2013

Motivated by the recent developments of pseudo-hermitian quantum mechanics, we analyze the structure of unbounded metric operators in a Hilbert space. It turns out that such operators generate a canonical lattice of Hilbert spaces, that is, the simplest case of a partial inner product space (PIP space). Next, we introduce several generalizations of the notion of similarity between operators and explore to what extend they preserve spectral properties. Then we apply some of the previous results to operators on a particular PIP space, namely, a scale of Hilbert spaces generated by a metric operator. Finally, we reformulate the notion of pseudo-hermitian operators in the preceding formalism.

A core cochlear phenotype in USH1 mouse mutants implicates fibrous links of the hair bundle in its cohesion, orientation and differential growth

2008

The planar polarity and staircase-like pattern of the hair bundle are essential to the mechanoelectrical transduction function of inner ear sensory cells. Mutations in genes encoding myosin VIIa, harmonin, cadherin 23,protocadherin 15 or sans cause Usher syndrome type I (USH1, characterized by congenital deafness, vestibular dysfunction and retinitis pigmentosa leading to blindness) in humans and hair bundle disorganization in mice. Whether the USH1 proteins are involved in common hair bundle morphogenetic processes is unknown. Here, we show that mouse models for the five USH1 genetic forms share hair bundle morphological defects. Hair bundle fragmentation and misorientation (25-52° mean ki…

Changes in the Three Dimensional Structure of Synaptic Ribbons in the Pineal Gland of the Guinea-Pig Caused by Constant Light

1997

Synaptic bodies (SBs) are dynamic synaptic organelles of afferent synapses of the retina, inner ear, lateral line organ and pineal gland in vertebrates. When investigated in a transmission electron microscope, their electron-dense rod-like, round or irregular profiles are surrounded by electron-lucent vesicles. The three-dimensional structure of pineal SBs is not precisely known. Pineal glands of two guinea-pigs (one kept under an LD cycle of 12:12 h; one kept in constant light for 8 weeks) were investigated. SBs were reconstructed in three dimensions to visualise morphological changes in constant light. Transmission electron microscope micrographs from up to 18 serial sections with a known…

The feast of St. Joseph as well as an important and heartfelt religious celebration is in Salemi above all the "feast of the loaves"beautiful achievements of high artistic craftsmanship whose wisdom is handed down in the families and in the associations of women who for many months work to produce the enormous quantity of small and large forms of bread to cover the votive constructions that welcome the ritual of dinner. Thus the idea of proposing an "Ecomuseum of wheat and bread" in the Jesuit College was born enhancing and re-opening a space of great historical-architectural interest to the public. As part of the consolidated collaboration of the Municipality of Salemi with the Department of Architecture professors and students worked on a strategic design project for museum set-up and communication also open forms of participation and sharing with the various territorial actors in a sort of 'social conversation' with the protagonists and skills in the field. A collaboration with Polimi Desis_Lab of the Milan Polytechnic concerning the contribution of the 'design of services for social innovation' was also initiated on these aspects.Settore ICAR/13 - Disegno Industriale
