Roles of Exogenous Technologies in Vehicle Innovation: Cases from a Japan’s Automotive Parts Manufacturing Firm
2017
This paper explores the roles of technological innovations in the growth of Japan’s motor vehicle industry, mainly from technology spillover perspective from the early 2000s to today. An empirical analysis focusing on business performances, R&D investments, and patent applications taking a noteworthy unique case in Japan was attempted. Empirical analyses on the productivity of patent to technology stock, use of exogenous technologies for their own technological innovation on its Automotive Business Unit elucidated that innovation capabilities, incorporation of exogenous technologies, and profit generation makes a virtuous cycle of continuous technological innovation. Furthermore, we fou…
Innovation expectations and patenting in private and public R&D projects
2017
peer-reviewed In this paper, we investigate how the innovation expectations of public financiers are related to realized patents. The analysis is based on a novel dataset of collaborative R&D projects subsidized by the Finnish Agency of Technology and Innovation (Tekes) and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) during the period 2000–2004. Innovation expectations are measured using reports submitted by Tekes experts during ex ante assessments of projects. Our probit model results reveal that Tekes’ patent expectations are positively related to realized patents for projects led by private firms (but not by public organizations). For large organizations, Tekes’ innovation expectations…
Ecology of Vastedda della valle del Belìce cheeses: A review and recent findings to stabilize the traditional production
2018
The increasing request for classic foods has led to a higher demand for cheeses enjoying a “recognition of quality” status. This phenomenon has also affected Sicilian dairy products, in particular protected designation of origin (PDO) “Vastedda della valle del Belìce” (VdB), a cheese traditionally available only during the summer season, but requested year round. The variations of the microbial populations of raw milk among the seasons influence the microbiological quality of the cheeses produced. This review article reports the historical importance of cheeses and the traditional equipment used for dairy productions in Sicily with a specific focus on VdB. The microbial ecology of this chee…
Posting and agency work in British construction and hospitality: the role of regulation in differentiating the experiences of migrants
2017
This article engages with IHRM debates on the transnational regulation of labour, exploring how migration policy and work fragmentation affect employment dynamics in multi-employer settings. It dra...
Do Online Travel Communities Matter? A Literature Review
2017
The emergence of social media has migrated consumers from peripheral stakeholders to strategic partners whose inputs are critical for successful product and service innovation. Online communities provide a platform for aggregation of consumers from diverse backgrounds; online travel communities (OTCs) have recently attracted growing interest in the information systems and tourism literature because their unofficial boundary spanning role influences consumer interest in destinations. Importantly, this literature remains largely fragmented because of conflicting findings. The present study seeks to integrate prior OTC research in order to understand the motivations and consequences (negative …
Kiireavusta innovatiivisten tietoyhteisöjen vahvistamiseen : ammattikorkeakoulujen työelämäkumppanit ja yhteistyö harjoittelujen järjestämiseksi
2007
Kansallisvaltioiden tasolla tietoyhteiskuntakehitystä on pyritty tukemaan vahvistamalla innovaatiojärjestelmiä.
An Economic Assessment of Micro-Scale Use of Renewable Energy Sources: Two Case Studies
2015
During recent times, renewable energy technologies have shown a relative fast growth in the global energy investment, global energy capacity and their integration within multiple sectors, particularly in the electricity sector. Renewable energy technologies have also experienced notorious declining costs on their manufacturing production. Nevertheless, while this growth is widely acknowledged, the share of renewables with respect total energy production has been moderate. Technological advancements in renewable energy have demonstrated the potential of renewables in energy generation and also that renewables can provide direct and indirect advantages over their counterparts. This thesis inv…
The effects of two-way communication and chat service usage on consumer attitudes in the e-commerce retailing sector
2018
In e-commerce retailing (e-retailing), where competitors are only one click away and prices are easy to compare, providing superior customer service and reciprocal communication via a company’s website are important aspects of attracting and retaining customers. One increasingly popular solution to improve customer service is a “live chat” interface that allows consumers to have real-time conversations online with customer service agents. As the literature on the impacts of real-time communication via live chat is currently very limited, this study develops and tests a model that demonstrates the moderating effects of a chat service on the relationship between two-way communication (i.e., a…
When more is less: The other side of artificial intelligence recommendation
2022
Based on consumers' preferences, AI (artificial intelligence) recommendation automatically filters information, which provokes scholars' debate. Supporters believe that by analyzing the consumers' preferences, AI recommendation enables consumers to choose products more quickly and with lower cost. Critics deem that consumers are more easily trapped in information cocoons because of the use of AI recommendation. This reduces the possibility of consumers contacting with a variety of commodities, thus lowering the consumer decision quality. Based on experiments, this paper discusses the moderating role of AI recommendation on the relationship of consumers' preferences and information cocoons. …
Transforming an In-prior Conference into a Massive Online Event to Celebrate the United Nation's World Creativity and Innovation Day amidst the COVID…
2022
The University of Jyväskylä’s UNESCO Chairs and the Council for Creative Education-Finland decided to celebrate the United Nation’s World Creativity and Innovation Day in the form of a traditional, physical conference on 21 April 2020. During the last phases of preparations for the event, the COVID-19 pandemic unexpectedly hit the world and the organisers needed to transform the traditional conference program into an online event with several innovative solutions. In this chapter, the conference organisers describe the theoretical and technical background of the online conference, which has started a new conference series at the University of Jyväskylä. When it became clear that the confere…
