First Report of Leaf Spot and Blight Caused by Ralstonia pickettii on Bird of Paradise Tree in Italy

Bird of Paradise tree (Strelitzia alba (L. f.) Skeels) is an ornamental perennial tropical plant grown in southern Italy. In the summer of 2006 and 2007, a widespread, severe leaf disease was observed on seedlings and 1- to 2-year-old plants in two glasshouses located in eastern Sicily. Disease incidence ranged from 10 to 25%. Symptoms on the leaves consisted of dark brown-to-black stripes of varying length and found between the lateral veins. Lesions sometimes coalesced into a large area of necrotic tissue. Symptomatic tissues were ground in a drop of sterile distilled water (SDW) with a scalpel. Survival in the soil of the ectomycorrhizal fungus Laccaria bicolor and the effects of a mycorrhiza helper Pseudomonas fluorescens

In disinfected forest nursery soils, inoculating Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) seedlings with the ectomycorrhizal fungal strain Laccaria bicolor S238N significantly increases tree growth after outplantating. However, the success of the inoculation depends on survival of the fungal inoculum in the soil during the pre-symbiotic life of the fungus. We followed the survival of L. bicolor S238N in autoclaved nursery soil in the glasshouse, and under gnotobiotic conditions in autoclaved or γ-irradiated nursery soil. Metarhizium anisopliae, a potential agent for the control of grape phylloxera

This investigation deals with the control effects of the insect pathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae var. anisopliae on Daktulosphaira vitifoliae. In pot experiments, the soil surrounding phylloxera-infected grapes was inoculated with barley colonised with M. anisopliae. Supression of Botrytis cinerea causing grey mould disease of grape vine (Vitis vinifera) and its pectinolytic activities by a soil bacterium

Abstract Botrytis cinerea was found to be pathogenic to grapevine, producing characteristic grey mould symptoms within 7 days of inoculation into vitroplants. An endospore forming bacterial strain (GI 070), Bacillus circulans, was found to be antagonist against this disease causing fungus. Under laboratory conditions the bacterial culture or its filtrate brings about complete suppression of the fungus in Petri-dishes and the grey mould symptoms on grapevine vitroplants. Pectinolytic activities (Polygalacaturonase, Pectin lyases) of Botrytis cinerea were also influenced by these bacteria. Degradation of stilbene-type phytoalexins in relation to the pathogenicity of Botrytis cinerea to grapevines

The ability of eight isolates of Botrytis cinerea to degrade the stilbene phytoalexins, resveratrol and pterostilbene, was compared with their pathogenicity to grapevines. All strains which degraded resveratrol and pterostilbene were highly or moderately pathogenic to in vitro cultures of grapevines (Vitis rupestris) after inoculation with agar disks containing mycelium, while those which were unable to degrade phytoalexins were non-pathogenic. Response to salinity stress of Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. viciae strains in the presence of different legume host plants

We investigated the effect of residual salts from the previous summer’s irrigation on two non-irrigated cover crops—broad bean and common vetch—and on their rhizobial symbiontics. Before sowing, seeds were inoculated with a salt-tolerant strain and a salt-sensitive strain of Rhizobium leguminosarum biovar viciae. An increase in the electrical conductivity of the saturated-soil extract from 2.0 dS m−1 to 6.0 dS m−1 caused a severe reduction of broad bean biomass, while growth of common vetch was almost unaffected by the salinity level. [u]Purpose[/u]: Most of the studies dealing with visual perception disabilities in children suffering from developmental dyslexia have been done in orthophoric position. The objective of the present study is to explore the visual perception during eye movements.
