PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to offer a new analysis and understanding of the notion of deinstitutionalization. Deinstitutionalization of taken-for-granted practices as a natural consequence of ever-increasing entropy seems to directly contradict the major institutional thesis, namely, that over time isomorphic forces increase and, as a result, possibilities for deinstitutionalization decrease culminating in the impossibility of abandoning in highly institutionalized fields.Design/methodology/approachThis paper is conceptual in nature. PurposeOnce introduced and conceptualized as a factor that causes erosion and decay of social institutions and subsequent deinstitutionalization, the notion of entropy is at odds with predictions of institutional isomorphism and seems to directly contradict the tendency toward ever-increasing institutionalization. Suomalaiselle kolmannelle sektorille on ollut tyypillistä, että toiminta perustuu kansalaisten vapaaehtoiseen toimintaan yhdistysten jäseninä. Viimeaikaisen tutkimuksen mukaan kolmannen sektorin järjestöt näyttävät kuitenkin omaksuvan piirteitä julkiselta ja yksityiseltä sektorilta eli hybridisoituvan. Tutkimuksen tehtävänä on selvittää suomalaisen orkesterilaitoksen asemaa suomalaisessa yhteiskunnassa painottaen orkesterilaitoksen luonteessa ilmenevää autonomian ja yhteiskunnallisen toimijuuden dualismia. Institutional Path Dependence in Competitive Dynamics: The Case of Paper Industries in Finland and the USA

Prior research on competitive dynamics has failed to offer tools to understand distorted patterns of competition that emerge from distinct institutional and historical contexts. Our analysis suggests that a joint effect of institutional rules, governance structures, and shared cognition plays a pivotal role in firm-level competitive behavior and capability development. We show how globally significant market positions can result from specific institutional arrangements between firms and governments, especially if coupled with interfirm contractual commitments. Emeritusprofessori Kari Palonen avaa Max Webein yhteyttä Euroopan Unioniin. Koska Weber kuoli espanjantautiin kesäkuussa 1920, hänellä ei kuitenkaan voinut olla mitään käsitystä Euroopan unionista, sellaisena kuin me sen tunnemme. Palonen lähestyykin Euroopan Unionia Weberin ajatusten kautta, joissa esimerkiksi ymmärretään toteutuneita mahdollisuuksia vertaamalla niitä toteutumattomiin. Palonen ei myöskään ole ainoa Weber-tutkija, joka on pohtinut Weberin suhdetta Euroopan integraatioon.

Nowadays many Italian policy makers, both at a national and regional level, are devoting a growing attention to the phenomenon of patients’ movements seeking public healthcare treatments out of the territorial jurisdiction.
