Firms’ distance to the European productivity frontier
2022
AbstractIn this article we explore the factors contributing to reduce the distance of laggard firms to the European frontier, focusing on institutional factors. To characterize Total Factor Productivity frontier firms within industries for the European Union we use firm level data from AMADEUS for the period 2003–2014. Our findings provide evidence on the importance of governance quality and easiness in getting credit in explaining the distance of laggard firms to the European productivity frontier. We also find that other factors at the country level -tertiary education, R&D stock, and trade openness- and at the firm level -size, age, and capital-intensity- influence the distance of la…

Posted work and deterritorialization in the European Union: a study of the German construction and meat industry
2015

The data consist of online forum entries and reports from small group discussions between 40 students in English medium master’s programs in Finland (Europe). The key concepts of ideology and imaginary serve as entries into data analysis, which consists of enunciative discourse analysis. The findings indicate a perceived hi…

2016
Pro gradu -tutkielman kohteena on kaunokirjallisuuteen erikoistuneiden pienkustantajien suhde muuhun kirja-alaan. Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan kirja-alaa instituutioteoreettisesta näkökulmasta, jonka mukaan organisaatioita ohjaavat toimialalla tietyt institutionaalistuneet rakenteet ja toimintatavat. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on ottaa selvää, minkälaisia institutionaalisia vaatimuksia ja edellytyksiä pienkustantamoihin kohdistuu muista kirja-alan toimijoista käsin ja miten pienkustantamot suhtautuvat niihin. Tutkimuksen aineisto koostuu kahdeksan pienkustantajan haastatteluista. Aineisto on käsitelty sisällönanalyysin keinoin, ja analyysia on ohjannut Christine Oliverin vuonna 1991 julkaistuss…
Playful approaches to news engagement
2020
From crossword puzzles and quizzes to more complex gamification strategies and serious newsgames, legacy media has long explored ways to deploy playful approaches to deliver their content and engage with the audience. We examine how news and games fit together when news organizations, game creators and news audiences welcome gameful forms of communication and participation. Moreover, we reflect on the theoretical and empirical significance of merging news with games as a way to reformulate normative assumptions, production practices and consumption patterns. As a result, the boundaries between journalism and game’s logics start to erode, and they begin to find new ways of converging.
