What is individual in individualised instruction? Five storylines of meeting individual needs at school

2015

Abstract The purpose of this narrative case study was to examine the meanings and practices of individualised instruction narrated by two seventh-grade Finnish pupils with mild learning difficulties, their mothers, their special education teacher and researchers. The data comprise narrative interviews and field notes. The analysis showed that the narrators had various, even conflicting, experiences of individualisation, which was narrated through five storylines: individual needs as difficulties and limitations; individualisation as the ideal principle for inclusive education; individualisation as a bureaucratic procedure; individualised instruction as making room for emotions, and individu…

Is telephone follow-up useful in preventing post-extraction bleeding in patients on antithrombotic treatment?

2021

Background The aim of the study was to investigate the usefulness of telephone follow-up in preventing post-extraction bleeding and improving wound healing in patients on chronic antithrombotic treatment. Material and methods A prospective randomized clinical trial was carried out on 256 patients (test group = 128; control group = 128). The exact two-tailed Fisher test and the two-tailed non-parametric Mann-Whitney test were used for statistical analysis. Results The incidence of post-extraction bleeding was 15.6% and there was no difference between test and control groups. However, the study group was significantly, though weakly, associated with the severity of bleeding. Patient satisfact…

Käsitetestien synnyttämä keskustelu mekaniikan peruskurssilla

2013

Tässä tutkielmassa tarkasteltiin käsitetestien synnyttämää keskustelua mekaniikan peruskurssilla. Käsitetestit ovat oleellinen osa Peer Instruction -opetusmenetelmää, joka pyrkii lisäämään opiskelijoiden roolia aktiivisina oppijina massakurssilla. Kurssin luennot rakentuivat vuorottelevista luennoitsijan alustuksista ja esitetyistä käsitetesteistä. Opiskelijat pohtivat ja vastasivat ensin testeihin itsenäisesti. Tätä seurasi muutaman minuutin mittainen ryhmäkeskustelu, jonka jälkeen opiskelijat vastasivat kysymykseen uudelleen. Lopuksi testin ratkaisu käytiin läpi - yleensä luennoitsijan johdolla. Työssä tutkittiin, millaista opiskelijoiden käymä keskustelu on käsitetestien aikana, ja kuink…

Applying Minimalism in the Real World: Results From a Workshop

2020

Minimalism is a user-centered, contextual and goal-oriented approach to technical communication originally developed by John M. Carroll (1990). In minimalism, the aim is to produce user documentation that focuses on the user’s needs, helps the user recover from error situations, and strengthens the user’s skills in working with the system (Carroll & van der Meij 1995: 245). The challenge with minimalism has been its practical application: although user-centeredness – the core of minimalism – is the key issue in technical communication, the abstract nature of the approach and its focus on software documentation has made it difficult to apply in industry settings (Virtaluoto, Suojanen & Isohe…

Vastuullisuusarvot suomalaisten tekstiiliyritysten tarinoissa

2022

Textile industry causes significant negative environmental and social impacts. Sustainability in the industry has lately yielded more and more research interest, however, sustainability communication is underresearched area. In this paper, we will focus on sustainability communications in the Finnish textile industry through the stories of companies in their webpages. Storytelling has traditionally been a mode of transmitting, producing and reproducing the culture. Stories produce a structure in the reality, explain phenomena and concretize abstract concepts. In this research, we approach the stories as rhetorical devises, which address, attract and connect the reader to the company behind …

The competency-based approach in developing countries

2013

For decades, all analyzes converge on the idea of the relative inefficiency of education systems in sub-Saharan Africa. Dropout, repetition, overstaffing, low quality of learning student failure and obsolescence of facilities, teaching materials and teachers, including sometimes the levels and quality of education remain somewhat uncertain, inadequate educational programs. In short, these are some of the ills that plague these systems and confirm the findings made by many reports.Given this weakness finding, educational authorities, supported by international aid mobilized in many countries to improve their systems to qualitatively, but also quantitatively equity because we must not forget …

Recipient Design by Gestures : How Depictive Gestures Embody Actions in Cooking Instructions

2022

This paper investigates how depictive gestures, i.e., hand movements that depict actions, scenes or objects, are configured and used for accomplishing instructions. By drawing on video recordings of second language interactions in cooking classes for newcomers in Finland, we focus on instructions that project a certain type of complying bodily action as the relevant next action. We demonstrate that the instructions are designed to be sensitive not only to the contingencies of the material ecology of the kitchen but also to the epistemic and linguistic asymmetries between the participants. The analysis shows how depictive gestures contribute to the forward-feeding function of cooking instruc…

Visual cues improve students’ understanding of divergence and curl: Evidence from eye movements during reading and problem solving

2019

The coordination of multiple external representations is important for learning, but yet a difficult task for students, requiring instructional support. The subject in this study covers a typical relation in physics between abstract mathematical equations (definitions of divergence and curl) and a visual representation (vector field plot). To support the connection across both representations, two instructions with written explanations, equations, and visual representations (differing only in the presence of visual cues) were designed and their impact on students’ performance was tested. We captured students’ eye movements while they processed the written instruction and solved subsequent c…
