Screening of antioxidant potentials and bioactive properties of the extracts obtained from two Centaurea L. species (C. kroumirensis coss. and C. sic…
2020
Herbal medicines, dietary supplements, or infusions with health promoting effects can note strong consumer demand. Hence, researchers and scientists have been increasingly focusing on the promotion of medicinal plants. In this respect, the present study has the evaluation of the biological properties of different extracts (hexane, chloroform, methanol, ultrasonic, essential oil, and supercritical) obtained from two Centaurea species (C. kroumirensis (Coss.) and C. sicula L. subsp sicula) as purpose. Antioxidative activities were assessed by in vitro assays including total phenolic content, free radical scavenging assay and ferric ion reducing power. Among the fourteen extracts examined, the…
Efficient transfer of positrons from a buffer-gas-cooled accumulator into an orthogonally oriented superconducting solenoid for antihydrogen studies
2012
Positrons accumulated in a room-temperature buffer-gas-cooled positron accumulator are efficiently transferred into a superconducting solenoid which houses the ATRAP cryogenic Penning trap used in antihydrogen research. The positrons are guided along a 9 m long magnetic guide that connects the central field lines of the 0.15 T field in the positron accumulator to the central magnetic field lines of the superconducting solenoid. Seventy independently controllable electromagnets are required to overcome the fringing field of the large-bore superconducting solenoid. The guide includes both a 15° upward bend and a 105° downward bend to account for the orthogonal orientation of the positron accu…
Espaces funéraires et mobiliers en Champagne-Ardenne durant l'Antiquité tardive
2010
International audience; This article attempts to demonstrate the criteria used in the organization of funerary spaces at the end of Antiquity. Amongthose elements that structure the funerary space, the enclosure trench, understood as a delimiting characteristic or a place for the deposit of objects, seems to have been of decreasing importance. The age of the deceased affects the choice of siting of the grave and treatment of the body, while deposits of grave goods seem little linked to the age of the deceased. An exception to this observation is objects of apotropaic value, which are more frequently found in the graves of the young. On the other hand, gender seems to play a role of little i…

Identifying the Unknown Content of an Ancient Egyptian Sealed Alabaster Vase from Kha and Merit’s Tomb Using Multiple Techniques and Multicomponent S…
2020
This article highlights the multianalytical study of exuded liquid from an ancient Egyptian sealed alabaster vase by Master's students in an applied chemistry for cultural heritage course. Master students are introduced to the field of Archaeometry that see the collaboration of experts in different areas of research such as conservators, curators of museums, physicists, chemists, etc. The sample is a residue exuded on the linen strip sealing an ancient Egyptian alabaster vase (inventory number S.8448) from the collection of the Museo Egizio in Turin (Italy). The students start to plan the noninvasive investigation by X-ray fluorescence (XRF), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and ener…
Hydrolysis of dioxouranium(VI): a calorimetric study in NaClaq and NaClO4aq, at 25°C
2004
Abstract We report the results of a calorimetric study on the hydrolysis of UO 2 2+ in different ionic media (NaClO 4 aq , NaCl aq ) at 25 °C. Experiments in NaCl were performed at different ionic strength, at I ≤1 mol l −1 . The species considered in both ionic media were UO 2 (OH) + , (UO 2 ) 2 (OH) 2 2+ and (UO 2 ) 3 (OH) 5 + , and in addition (UO 2 ) 3 (OH) 4 2+ and (UO 2 ) 3 (OH) 7 − in NaCl aq . The dependence on ionic strength of enthalpy changes in NaCl aq was expressed by the simple linear equation Δ H pq =Δ H ° pq + aI 1/2 ( a , empirical parameter). Comparison with literature findings is given and some recommended values are reported.
Protonation thermodynamics of 2,2'-bipyridyl in aqueous solution. Salt effects and weak complex formation
1993
Abstract Protonation constants of 2,2'-bipyridyl (bipy) have been determined potentiometrically, using (H + )-glass electrode, in different aqueous media (alkali and alkaline earth chlorides, tetramethylammonium chloride and tetramethylammonium iodide) at different temperatures and ionic strengths. The differences in log K H values are explained using a complex formation model. Formation thermodynamic parameters are given.
Thermodynamic parameters for the formation of glycine complexes with magnesium(II), calcium(II), lead(II), manganese(II), cobalt(II), nickel(II), zin…
1995
Abstract Protonation constants and Mg 2+ , Ca 2+ , Pb 2+ , Mn 2+ -, Co 2+ , Ni 2+ , Cu 2+ , Zn 2+ and Cd 2+ glycine complex formation constants have been determined in different aqueous media at different temperatures. Salt effects are explained by a complex formation model which takes into account the formation of weak species. From the temperature dependence of the formation constants, thermodynamic parameters ΔH θ (and in some cases ΔC θ p ) have been obtained. A rigorous analysis of literature data, together with experimental findings, allows recommended formation parameters, in the ranges 0 ≤ I e ≤ 1 mol l −1 ( I e is the effective ionic strength) and 5°C ≤ T ≤ 45°C, to be obt…
Interaction of quinine with negatively charged lipid vesicles studied by fluorescence spectroscopy Influence of the pH
1997
Abstract The interaction of quinine with dimyristoylphosphatidic acid (DMPA) and dimyristoylphosphatidyl glycerol (DMPG) small unilamellar vesicles in the gel phase was studied by steady-state fluorescence spectroscopy at pHs 7, 6, 5 and 4 and 20°C. In aqueous solution, with excitation at 335 nm, the emission fluorescence spectrum of quinine varied with pH reflecting the occurrence of different charged species of the drug. In all cases, the emission maximum centered at 383 or 443 nm shifted to lower wavelength in the presence of vesicles. This indicates that the membrane-bound state quinine is in an environment of low polarity. Drug monocationic species were deeply buried in DMPG relative t…
Thermodynamics of transfer of some nitroalkanes from aqueous to dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide micellar phases
1988
Abstract The enthalpies of mixing of some aqueous n-nitroalkane solutions with dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide micellar solutions were determined. The experimental data were treated by using a previously reported approach giving the enthalpies of transfer of solute from the aqueous to the micellar phases and the distribution constant of solute between the two phases at the same time. From these, the standard thermodynamic quantities of transfer (ΔtrfG°, ΔtrfH° and ΔtrfS°) are derived. In order to study the effect of the nature of both the solvent and the head group of solute, these properties are compared with those from water to octane and with those of alcohols and nitriles from aqueous …
