La Sicilia e le sue Costituzioni (1812, 1848, 1860, 1946)

2022

Sicily and its «Constitutions» (1812, 1848, 1860, 1946) The essay highlights the constitutional evolution of Sicily, tracing it back to the British Mediterranean constitutionalism and the condition of the insularity of Sicily: starting from the «ephemeral constitution of 1812», passing through the «inconclusive revolution of 1820» and reaching the «glorious revolution» and the Constitution of 1848, then to the fundamental Charter never born, such as the Statute of 1860, up to the Autonomist Statute of 1946. The latter constitutes the reference of the Sicilian special autonomy in republican Italy, among roots, intuitions, and contradictions.

Land molluscs from the Isola delle Femmine Nature Reserve (north-western Sicily, Italy) (Gastropoda Architaenioglossa Pulmonata)

2021

The results of a study on the fauna of land molluscs from Isola delle Femmine Nature Reserve (NW Sicily, Italy) (Gastropoda Architaenioglossa Pulmonata) are here described. In this small island 23 species have been found, 6 of which are Sicilian endemic taxa. Siciliaria leucophryna microinsularis n. ssp. endemic to the Isola delle Femmine (or Isola di Fuori) is described. For each species ecological, distributional data and information on their presence on this island are provided.

La géographie de la Sicile dans la Bibliothéque Historique de Diodore de Sicile

2023

Diodorus’ information on Sicilian geography are few, and they occur in Books 4-5, devoted to local myths. The historian deals especially with subjects such as insularity, site, dimensions of the Island, with the aim to stress the central role played by Sicily within the ancient Mediterranean world, also from a geographical point of view. In Diodorus’ Sicilian “Archaeology” the coeval data about geography mingle with mythical information, often approximative and unreal, which the historian found in previous literary traditions. Yet mythical heroes left traces of their presence on the Island, and these are considered by Diodorus as still visible in his times, and a proof of their passage. Cen…

New data on the taxonomy of the endemic myomiminae (gliridae, rodentia) from the late miocene-early pliocene of gargano (southern Italy) with the des…

2009

The Late Miocene-Early Pliocene “Terre Rosse” vertebrate assemblages, found in the palaeokarst fissure fillings of the Apricena-Poggio Imperiale limestone quarries (North-Western side of the Gargano promontory, southern Italy), document a very long and complex history of endemic populations of a palaeoarchipelago. That history developed in at least four populating phases, which are characterised by changes in faunal diversity and include taxa with different degree of endemism. They have been subject of several studies since the beginning of the 1970s and deserve a particular attention for their evolutionary and palaeogeographical implications. The sampling of the “Terre Rosse” fissure filli…

Phenotypic and genetic variability in Forest thrush, Turdus lherminieri at different scales

2012

Understanding the mechanisms underlying population structure is a crucial issue in evolutionary biology and ecology. Identifying the processes driving biodiversity is also of prime interest to draw up guidelines for population management and conservation planning. Level of differentiation depends on a subtle balance between gene flow, genetic drift and natural selection and insight into the relative contribution of these factors can be provided by spatial and temporal patterns of intra-specific phenotypic and genetic variations. Differentiation has mainly been studied in insular systems because i) islands give ideal framework to study divergence in species ii) islands enclosed endemic fauna…

Origination and extinction patterns of mammals in three central Western Mediterranean islands from the Late Miocene to Quaternary

2008

Abstract An overview of the population histories of three insular realms (Gargano palaeo-archipelago, Sardinia–Maritime Tuscany palaeo-bioprovince and the Sicilian insular complex) during the Late Miocene and Quaternary are here presented. The complexity of biodiversity changes in the islands is analysed to propose an interpretation of origination and extinction patterns. The study highlighted several important aspects of insular faunas. Evolutionary radiations were found to contribute significantly only to the Gargano faunal diversity, likely because the area was an archipelago at the time. Another interesting result is that large and small mammals do not disperse and become extinct all at…
