Noise Enhanced Stability in Fluctuating Metastable States

2004

We derive general equations for the nonlinear relaxation time of Brownian diffusion in randomly switching potential with a sink. For piece-wise linear dichotomously fluctuating potential with metastable state, we obtain the exact average lifetime as a function of the potential parameters and the noise intensity. Our result is valid for arbitrary white noise intensity and for arbitrary fluctuation rate of the potential. We find noise enhanced stability phenomenon in the system investigated: the average lifetime of the metastable state is greater than the time obtained in the absence of additive white noise. We obtain the parameter region of the fluctuating potential where the effect can be o…

Über eine methode zur bestimmung der intensität komplexer photopeaks

1966

Abstract Analysing photopeaks really occuring in γ-ray spectra their asymmetrical structure can easily be demonstrated. To describe the shape of photopeaks this study therefore recommends the use of empirical functions instead of the normal distribution function. It can be shown, that in a wide energy and intensity range photopeaks are exactly described by two empirical functions which are normalized with respect to the fractional peak height. Taking account of this fact, a new procedure is derived which allows the decomposition of overlapping photopeaks even in the case of small energy distance and unfavorable intensity ratio. The method applied to numerous examples under practical conditi…

[P149] Beam profile characteristic points designation for off-axis, wedged and FFF beams

2018

Purpose The main aim of this work is the search of characteristic points of a beam profile and application of these points for the TPS commissioning purposes. The comparison between profiles during the commissioning of the treatment planning system is a very important procedure. It is impossible to designate a field size for the off-axis, wedged and FFF beams directly using the definition of the on-axis symmetric field size. This work demonstrates how to compute good indicators of the field size that can be used for commissioning and QA purposes. Methods The proposal is to use profile inflection points as the beam profile characteristic points. The comparison of distances between inflection…

Metal ion beams from an ECR ion source using volatile compounds

1994

Abstract A new MIVOC method (Metal Ions from Volatile Compounds) at an ECR ion source gives a means to produce highly charged metal ion beams at room temperature conditions. Chemical compounds containing metallic atoms are utilized. The compound has to fulfill the two basic requirements: Vapour pressure of the compound is relatively high at room temperature. Evaporation and diffusion of the compound into the source take place without dissociation of the molecule. Up to present metal ion beams from iron and nickel compounds have been produced. The maximum currents of 56Fe9+ and 58Ni10+ from natural elements were 23.9 μA and 18.7 μA, respectively. First measurements have demonstrated the abil…

Multilayered samples reconstructed by measuring Kα/Kβ or Lα/Lβ X-ray intensity ratios by EDXRF

2013

Abstract In this paper a general method based on energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) analysis has been tested to assess its possible use as a tool to reconstruct the structure and determine the thickness of two and/or multi-layered materials. The method utilizes the X-ray intensity ratios of Kα/Kβ or Lα/Lβ peaks (or the ratio of these peaks) for selected elements present in multi-layered objects of various materials (Au alloys, gilded Cu, gilded Ag, gilded Pb, Ag–Au Tumbaga, stone surfaces with protective treatments, Zn or Nickel plating on metals). Results show that, in the case of multi-layered samples, a correct calculation of the peak ratio (Kα /Kβ and/or Lα/Lβ) of relevant ele…

Plasma Effecton Pulse Parameters of Sound Wave

2019

This article presents the experimental results of the effect of gas discharge plasma on an acoustic wave. It is shown that after a certain intensity of the acoustic wave, the presence of plasma leads to a decrease in the Q -factor of the acoustic resonator, a shift in the acoustic resonance in the gas discharge tube at a lower frequency, and after switching off the acoustics, low-frequency gas oscillations with a frequency of 2 Hz are generated in the tube.

Production and release of ISOL beams from molten fluoride salt targets

2014

In the framework of the Beta Beams project, a molten fluoride target has been proposed for the production of the required 1013 18Ne/s. The production and extraction of such rates are predicted to be possible on a circulating molten salt with 160 MeV proton beams at close to 1 MW power. As a most important step to validate the concept, a prototype has been designed and investigated at CERN-ISOLDE using a static target unit. The target material consisted of a binary fluoride system, NaF:LiF (39:61 mol.%), with melting point at 649 °C. The production of Ne beams has been monitored as a function of the target temperature and proton beam intensity. The prototype development and the results of th…

Effect of reflections on phase hologram recording in amorphous As-S-Se films

2002

Experimental and theoretical studies of phase hologram recording in amorphous As-S-Se films with slightly wedge-shaped thickness profile are presented. It is shown that Fabry-Perot resonator effect caused by the interference of multiply reflected light beams inside the sample strongly changes the values of diffraction efficiency and its growth rate as well as the exposure time dependences of diffraction efficiency and transmissivity making them site-dependent and sample-dependent. Absorptivity and recording light intensity inside the sample are also significantly changed. The obtained results can be used to explain the holographic and optical experiments also in other materials with Fabry-P…

Scintillation light produced by low-energy beams of highly-charged ions

2007

Measurements have been performed of scintillation light intensities emitted from various inorganic scintillators irradiated with low-energy beams of highly-charged ions from an electron beam ion source (EBIS) and an electron cyclotron resonance ion source (ECRIS). Beams of xenon ions Xe$^{q+}$ with various charge states between $q$=2 and $q$=18 have been used at energies between 5 keV and 17.5 keV per charge generated by the ECRIS. The intensity of the beam was typically varied between 1 and 100 nA. Beams of highly charged residual gas ions have been produced by the EBIS at 4.5 keV per charge and with low intensities down to 100 pA. The scintillator materials used are flat screens of P46 YA…
