Determinants of spatial intensity of stop locations on cruise passengers tracking data

This paper aims at analyzing the spatial intensity in the distribution of stop locations of cruise passengers during their visit at the destination through a stochastic point process modelling approach on a linear network. Data collected through the integration of GPS tracking technology and questionnaire-based survey on cruise passengers visiting the city of Palermo are used, to identify the main determinants which characterize their stop locations pattern. Uterine fibroids are benign tumors that can affect female patients during reproductive years. Magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) represents a noninvasive approach that uses thermal ablation principles to treat symptomatic fibroids. During traditional treatment planning, uterus, fibroids, and surrounding organs at risk must be manually marked on MR images by an operator. After treatment, an operator must segment, again manually, treated areas to evaluate the non-perfused volume (NPV) inside the fibroids. Light Scattering Measurements of Hemoglobin Critical Fluctuation and the Energy Landscape For Polymerization

We have developed a novel method for measuring light scattering to observe critical fluctuations in hemoglobin (Hb) solutions. A small rectangular cell (0.2 x 4.0 x 30 mm) is filled with 24 μL of Hb solution. An optical fiber with outer diameter of 125 μm (62.5 μm core) is sealed into the cell in contact with the solution, and light scattering is measured at 90°. The flat faces of the cell permit measuring absorbance spectra to ensure sample integrity. The scattering source is a 785 nm laser diode that delivers 1.5 mW to the sample. Noise-enhanced stability of periodically driven metastable states

We study the effect of noise-enhanced stability of periodically driven metastable states in a system described by piecewise linear potential. We find that the growing of the average escape time with the intensity of the noise is depending on the initial condition of the system. We analytically obtain the condition for the noise enhanced stability effect and verify it by numerical simulations.

What we look at in paintings: A comparison between experienced and inexperienced art viewers

How do people look at art? Are there any differences between how experienced and inexperienced art viewers look at a painting? We approach these questions by analyzing and modeling eye movement data from a cognitive art research experiment, where the eye movements of twenty test subjects, ten experienced and ten inexperienced art viewers, were recorded while they were looking at paintings. Eye movements consist of stops of the gaze as well as jumps between the stops. Inhomogeneous spatio-temporal point processes on linear networks for visitors’ stops data

We analyse the spatio-temporal distribution of visitors' stops by touristic attractions in Palermo (Italy) using theory of stochastic point processes living on linear networks. We first propose an inhomogeneous Poisson point process model, with a separable parametric spatio-temporal first-order intensity. This paper deals with the problem of making inferences on the maximum radius and the intensity of the Poisson point process associated to a Boolean Model of circular primary grains with uniformly distributed random radii. Point process diagnostics based on weighted second-order statistics and their asymptotic properties

A new approach for point process diagnostics is presented. The method is based on extending second-order statistics for point processes by weighting each point by the inverse of the conditional intensity function at the point’s location. The result is generalized versions of the spectral density, R/S statistic, correlation integral and K-function, which can be used to test the fit of a complex point process model with an arbitrary conditional intensity function, rather than a stationary Poisson model. Asymptotic properties of these generalized second-order statistics are derived, using an approach based on martingale theory.

Gamma Kernel Intensity Estimation in Temporal Point Processes

In this article, we propose a nonparametric approach for estimating the intensity function of temporal point processes based on kernel estimators. In particular, we use asymmetric kernel estimators characterized by the gamma distribution, in order to describe features of observed point patterns adequately. Some characteristics of these estimators are analyzed and discussed both through simulated results and applications to real data from different seismic catalogs.
