La Media Education tra cultura partecipativa e intenzionalità civica. Due casi di studio
2022
The mass diffusion of the web in the early 1990s, and the web 2.0 a decade later, has undoubtedly allowed a more democratic access to information and knowledge, and served as a catalyst for sociability and participation as it offers the possibility of cultivating spaces for discussion and sharing with a potentially infinite number of people. Since then, innumerable forms of grassroot online engagement have grown in the most diverse fields, from leisure, to politics, to civicism making concrete the possibility of a new digital public sphere (Marinelli and Cioni 2014, Bartoletti and Faccioli 2013, Dahlgren 2009). This socio- communicative ferment, which Jenkins (1992) describes with the contr…
The Procedural Approach to Texts
2016
The intention of this chapter is to show the peculiarities of the point of view of Dressler and de Beaugrande, expressed in their work. The position taken by the two authors in their Introduction is a veiled criticism against van Dijk and Petőfi, which are accused of excessive rigour. Dressler and de Beaugrande’s procedural approach avoids the use of logical bases and they propose a point of view closer to cognitive science. According to Dressler and de Beaugrande, the heart of the procedural approach is semantics. In their view, knowledge and meaning are sensitive to the situation in which they are used. So, the two authors believe that framing the texts and the knowledge about the real wo…

Motivational Analysis in Husserl’s Genetic Phenomenology
2018
The paper discusses motivation as the inner lawfulness of consciousness and a central methodological principle of genetic phenomenology, highlighting the problem of its ambiguous status oscillating between a historical-empirical and a transcendental account of consciousness. The focus on motivation allows for the practical character of intentionality to emerge, thus presenting genetic phenomenology as a more comprehensive approach to subjective life which takes into account its constitutive indeterminacy.
Media education and educational commons for youth civic engagement. A case study from the Horizon 2020 project SMOOTH
2023
This study presents the preliminary findings of the first round of implementation of a case study included in the Horizon 2020 project SMOOTH. The project's main objective is to introduce and study the emergent paradigm of the educational commons as an alternative system of values and actions for promoting intercultural and intergenerational dialogue and establishing spaces of democratic citizenship that support the development of local communities. Our case study adopts this paradigm with insights derived from the field of media education. Hence, our research questions were as follows: (a) How do young people collectively experience and build the educational commons? (b) How do participant…

Seeing Some One
2018
This paper outlines a light approach to heavy issues of consciousness. The basic claim is that human minds are very much tailored to the requirements of action perception, that is, to what people see when they watch other people acting. I argue that the third-person perspective entailed in action perception offers an easy and more direct access to such enigmatic things as selfhood, intentionality, and agency than the first-person perspective does. In a sense, we get these things for free when we study action perception. I do not claim that the study of action perception can solve (or even dissolve) the enigmata entailed in consciousness. I do claim, however, that it sheds new light on relat…
Social Ontology, Collective Intentionality, and Mindreading
2013
Standard accounts of social reality take collective intentionality as the starting point of the creation and maintenance of social facts. But collective intentionality is enabled, as Searle suggests, by a more basic capacity to understand another person as an agent like oneself and as ready to engage in cooperative activities. We can coordinate our collective actions only insofar we are able to explain and predict the behavior of other persons, we can understand behavior only insofar we can mindread them, and we can mindread them only if we assume the constitutive role of rationality in action. Therefore …
