Lifetime of metastable states and suppression of noise in interdisciplinary physical models

2008

Transient properties of different physical systems with metastable states perturbed by external white noise have been investigated. Two noise-induced phenomena, namely the noise enhanced stability and the resonant activation, are theoretically predicted in a piece-wise linear fluctuating potential with a metastable state. The enhancement of the lifetime of metastable states due to the noise, and the suppression of noise through resonant activation phenomenon will be reviewed in models of interdisciplinary physics: (i) dynamics of an overdamped Josephson junction; (ii) transient regime of the noisy FitzHugh-Nagumo model; (iii) population dynamics.

Holistic Architecture for Music Education: A research design for carrying out empiric and interdisciplinary studies in didactics of music

2019

Multiscale modeling of polycrystalline materials: A boundary element approach to material degradation and fracture

2015

Abstract In this work, a two-scale approach to degradation and failure in polycrystalline materials is proposed. The formulation involves the engineering component level (macro-scale) and the material grain level (micro-scale). The macro-continuum is modeled using a three-dimensional boundary element formulation in which the presence of damage is formulated through an initial stress approach to account for the local softening in the neighborhood of points experiencing degradation at the micro-scale. The microscopic degradation is explicitly modeled by associating Representative Volume Elements (RVEs) to relevant points of the macro continuum, for representing the polycrystalline microstruct…

Quantifying the Potential Economic Benefits of Flexible Industrial Demand in the European Power System

2018

The envisaged decarbonization of the European power system introduces complex techno-economic challenges to its operation and development. Demand flexibility can significantly contribute in addressing these challenges and enable a cost-effective transition to the low-carbon future. Although extensive previous work has analyzed the impacts of residential and commercial demand flexibility, the respective potential of the industrial sector has not yet been thoroughly investigated despite its large size. This paper presents a novel, whole-system modeling framework to comprehensively quantify the potential economic benefits of flexible industrial demand (FID) for the European power system. This …

Ligand engineering in Cu(ii) paddle wheel metal–organic frameworks for enhanced semiconductivity

2020

We report the electronic structure of two metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with copper paddle wheel nodes connected by a N2(C2H4)3 (DABCO) ligand with accessible nitrogen lone pairs. The coordination is predicted, from first-principles density functional theory, to enable electronic pathways that could facilitate charge carrier mobility. Calculated frontier crystal orbitals indicate extended electronic communication in DMOF-1, but not in MOF-649. This feature is confirmed by bandstructure calculations and effective masses of the valence band egde. We explain the origin of the frontier orbitals of both MOFs based on the energy and symmetry alignment of the underlying building blocks. The effe…

SMART CULTURAL HERITAGE AND SUSTAINABLE URBAN DESIGN EXPERIMENTAL DISTRICTS IN SICILY AND IN GREECE

2014

The design is a creative process for the production of objects , projects and services that are used to meet any need. In architecture and city planning in the design process is designed especially to meet the needs of living. Sustainable urban design is in fact a creative process for the implementation of sustainable practices. Adding up the benefits for all sectors that deal with sustainability indices , it can be argued that the reduction of the environmental impact , better use of the cultural and environmental resources and an improved quality of life for the inhabitants are the main advantages to build sustainable urban development. There are various urban problems in certain cities o…
