Exchange Rate and Interest-Rate Driven Competitive Advantages in the EMU

2002

Real exchange and interest rates may still fluctuate inside the EMU and give rise to changes in competitiveness. We find, in contrast to what is generally expected, no convergence in these variables after the introduction of the euro. On the contrary, a divergence is found that is extraordinary when compared to the preceding 40 years. The magnitude of the divergence should urge on a wave of restructuring in the EMU, conditioned upon adequate policy responses. The worst-case scenario involves a flight to structural support and protectionism, challenging the whole idea of the EMU.

Efficiency in the eurobond market: application of nonparametric techniques

2007

The aim of this article is to analyse the efficiency of eurobond issuers within the primary market, from 1995 to 2000. The study includes a reference to theoretical discussion and to the methodology used; detailed explanation of the variables considered which, in order to supplement those strictly financial, include others such as spread from Interest Rate Risk (IRR) and respective swap; rating, duration and size; and macroeconomic fundamentals of the issuer country. Results and conclusions obtained from the static and dynamic efficiency analyses are then illustrated and discussed.

Impact of interest rate risk on the Spanish banking sector

2010

This paper examines the exposure of the Spanish banking sector to interest rate risk. With that aim, a univariate GARCH-M model, which takes into account not only the impact of interest rate changes but also the effect of their volatility on the distribution of bank stock returns, is used. The results show that both changes and volatility of interest rates have a negative and significant impact on the stock returns of the Spanish banking industry. Moreover, there seems to be a direct relationship between the size of banking firms and their degree of interest rate sensitivity.

Linear and Nonlinear Interest Rate Exposure of Spanish Firms

2006

This paper carries out a comprehensive analysis of the interest rate risk borne by the Spanish firms on a sector basis. The traditional linear interest rate exposure model has been extended to allow for the possibility of a nonlinear exposure component as well as the presence of asymmetric behaviour in the exposure pattern. The obtained results show a significant interest rate exposure for some sectors, especially with regard to changes in the long-term interest rates. Moreover, it is documented that the linear exposure profile prevails over the asymmetric and nonlinear exposure patterns. In particular, the Construction sector is the sector that shows the highest incidence of interest rate …

Interest Rate Risk in Banking: a Theoretical and Empirical Investigation through a Systemic Approach (Asset & Liability Management).

2013

The paper provides a theoretical analysis of the interest rate risk in banking through a systemic approach that is known in literature as “asset & liability management” approach. The paper provides also an empirical investigation on the exposure of banks to interest rate risk, using three different scenarios: parallel shift, slope shift, and bump shift of interest rate curves.

Simulating Term Structure of Interest Rates with Arbitrary Marginals

2007

Decision models under uncertainty need to be feeded with scenarios of the interest rate curve. Such scenarios have to comply, as close as possible, with the empirical distribution of each rate. Simulation models of the term structure usually assume that the conjugate distribution of the interest rates is lognormal. Dynamic models, like vector auto-regression, implicitly postulate that the logarithm of the interest rates is normally distributed. Statistical analyses have, however, shown that stationary transformations (yield changes) of the interest rates are substantially leptokurtic, thus posing serious doubts on the reliability of the available models. We propose in this paper a vector au…

Simulating term structure of interest rates with arbitrary marginals

2011

Decision models under uncertainty rely their analysis on scenarios of the economic factors. A key economic factor is the term structure of interest rates (yields). Simulation models of the yield curve usually assume that the conjugate distribution of the interest rates is lognormal. We propose in this paper a VARTA model (Biller and Nelson, 2003) to s…

Monetary Plurality in Economic Theory

2018

The objective of this article is to identify the monetary plurality in economic theory. We will try to throw light on the way in which theories are attracted towards both unicity and plurality, and more specifically by unification and diversification of money. It should also be noted, in this respect, that the economics of money has undergone considerable development since the 1970s. A survey of the diverse theories, whether mainstream or not, static or dynamic, holistic or individualistic, will reveal the surprising amount of attention devoted to the problem of monetary unicity and/or plurality. We base our presentation on two lines of thought: -The first of these lines concerns a situatio…

Stock prices and macroeconomic factors: Some European evidence

2016

Abstract This paper analyses the dependence of stock prices on macroeconomic variables in the three largest European economies: France, Germany and the United Kingdom. In recent decades, industrial production and long-term interest rates have been important significant variables accounting for approximately one half of annual movements in stock prices. Both factors seem to be equally important, but a closer examination reveals that the weight of these factors has clearly moved from interest rates to production. This evidence is common to all three of these European countries and is in sharp contrast with the results for the US.
