Use of positron annihilation measurements to detect the defect beneath worn surface of stainless steel 1.4301 (EN) under dry sliding condition
2012
Abstract Positron measurements were performed for detection of the subsurface zone in the stainless steel 1.4301 (EN) exposed to dry sliding. They revealed the defect profile induced by dry sliding which is extended inward the worn surface from 85 μm to 400 μm depending on the applied load during the tribo-test. This result was obtained using the positron techniques, while the microhardness profile exhibited shorter range of the microhardness depth profile, i.e., from 70 μm to 150 μm. However, at the depth of about 5 μm from the worn surface the sudden increase in the microhardness was observed. The complementary measurements of X-ray diffraction and SEM micrographs of the worn surface were…
An X-ray scattering study of lipid monolayers at the air-water interface and on solid supports
1988
Abstract Monolayers of the lipid arachidic acid (C20) and of the phospholid dimyristolyphosphatidic acid (PMDA) have been studied by X-ray reflection and diffraction technique, using a purpose-built Langmuir trough installed at the sample stage of our high-resolution X-ray diffractometer at the DORIS synchroton X-ray source in Hamburg. For comparison we also report data for monolayers of C20 on a solid support using a 10 kW rotating anode X-ray source. By the X-ray reflection method, the density profile across the interface is probe, while in-plane diffraction measurements gauge the two-dimensional crystalline properties of the monolayers. Flourescence microscopy experiments of DMPA monolay…
Synthesis and Spectroscopic Properties of Silica−Dye−Semiconductor Nanocrystal Hybrid Particles
2010
We prepared silica-dye-nanocrystal hybrid particles and studied the energy transfer from semiconductor nanocrystals (= donor) to organic dye molecules (= acceptor). Multishell CdSe/CdS/ZnS semiconductor nanocrystals were adsorbed onto monodisperse Stöber silica particles with an outer silica shell of thickness 2-23 nm containing organic dye molecules (Texas Red). The thickness of this dye layer has a strong effect on the energy transfer efficiency, which is explained by the increase in the number of dye molecules homogeneously distributed within the silica shell, in combination with an enhanced surface adsorption of nanocrystals with increasing dye amount. Our conclusions were underlined by…
A resilient distributed measurement system for smart grid application
2020
Since the production of energy from renewable energy sources is strongly increasing, the migration from the classical electric grid toward the smart grid is becoming a reality. Distribution System Operators, along with the control of the entire network and its stability, need to address the security and the reliability of the communication channels and the data itself. In this paper a solution is proposed to address these issues. It is based on a distributed measurement system that relies on a wireless network as well as a redundant Power Line communication system in order to transfer the electrical measures to a centralized SCADA server. The collected data are used to run a power flow algo…
Exploring the cellular uptake of hectorite clay mineral and its drug carrier capabilities.
2022
In the last years, the use of clay minerals for pharmaceutical purposes has increased due to their interesting properties. Hectorite (Ht) is a clay belonging to the smectite group which has attracted attention for applications in biology, tissue engineering and as drug carrier and delivery system. However, the mechanisms involved in Ht cellular uptake and transport into cells, are still unclear. Herein, we used a labeled Ht (Ht/1Cl) to study both the cellular uptake, by confocal laser scanning microscopy, and internalization pathways involved in the cellular uptake, by various endocytosis-inhibiting studies and fluorescence microscopy. These studies highlighted that Ht can penetrate the cel…
Influence of drug polarity upon the solid-state structure and release properties of self-emulsifying drug delivery systems in relation with water aff…
2009
To overcome low oral bioavailability of poorly water-soluble drugs, self-emulsifying drug delivery systems (SEDDS) have been noted as a promising strategy. However, incorporation of drugs into SEDDS composed of Gelucire44/14 could induce interactions not yet well understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of drug polarity upon the solid-state structure of SEDDS formulation, particularly in terms of wettability, thermal behaviour and microscopic aspects and their effect upon the release properties of the SEDDS. Model drugs were naproxen and sodium naproxen (10% w/w), two drugs with similar chemical structure but different water solubilities. Both drugs had an effect o…

Helium isotope systematics of volcanic gases and thermal waters of Guadeloupe Island, Lesser Antilles
2014
Abstract The island of Guadeloupe is located in the middle of the 850 km long Lesser Antilles island arc. Present-day volcanic and geothermal activity is concentrated in two systems both located in the southwestern part of the island (Basse Terre): the La Soufriere volcanic complex and the Bouillante hydrothermal system, some 20 km to the northwest of the volcano. We report here the largest isotopic data set for helium isotopes in hydrothermal gases and waters from both systems, acquired between 1980 and 2012. 3 He/ 4 He ratios in the fumarolic gases of La Soufriere volcano have been quite homogeneous and stable over the last thirty years. The average ratio of 8.2 ± 0.2 R a confirms that th…
Public Institutions as Learning Environments in Finland
2012
Public cultural institutions in this article are understood to be a part of the built up environment. The services provided by these are available to all citizens in Finland. These include: libraries, museums, various art institutions, theatres, music institutions and science centres. The expertise of the writers of the article is based on museums and libraries as learning environments, so the content of the article will focus on them. Finland has a broad network of public libraries and museums.
