The collection of church art of the Valamo monastery belongs to worthy rarities. Due to the evacuation from Karelia to Finland, collection survived almost complete. Despite the fact that the collection is well known to specialists in Finland and Russia, the research processes is just beginning. Especially little information exists about the icons of earlier period than of the 18th century. Almost nothing is known about the number of them, neither origins nor something about the painters of them. Kulttuurihistoriallisten rakennusten säilymisen turvaamiseksi tarvitaan usein käyttötarkoituksen muutos. Kun rakennukset muokataan uuteen käyttöön, niiden alkuperäiset ominaispiirteet ovat vaarassa kadota. Usein rakennuksen ulkokuori on pyritty säilyttämään, mutta sisustuksia on saatettu muuttaa. Interiöörien värityksiin ovat eri aikoina vaikuttaneet sekä kansainväliset virtaukset, erilaiset väriteoriat että taiteilijoiden makumieltymykset. Vanhempia pintoja saattaa löytyä uudempien maalikerrosten alta väritutkimuksen avulla. Eri ikäiset pinnat vaativat erilaisia tutkimusmenetelmiä.
