In the rat cardiovascular system endothelin-1 (ET-1) elicits prolonged physiologic responses mediated by the ET A receptor, whereas the effects mediated by the ET B receptor are transient. The molecular mechanisms for the subtype-specific responses are not yet clear. However, post-translational modifications such as phosphorylation and palmitoylation may play an important role. In Sf9 cells overexpressing the human ET A and ET B receptors, both subtypes are palmitoylated. However, only the ET B but not the ET A receptor is phosphorylated in a ligand-dependent manner. Immunological insights into the pathogenesis of active CMV infection in non-immunosuppressed critically ill patients.

Dissociation of cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNA loads between the lower respiratory tract and blood, with high levels in the former compartment and low or undetectable levels in the latter, commonly occurs during active CMV infection in critically ill patients despite the presence of high frequencies of CMV-specific IFN-γ-producing CD8+ and CD4+ T cells in blood. Data presented in this case report suggest that inter-compartmental differences in interleukin-10 (IL-10) levels may, in part, explain the pathobiology of this phenomenon. Screening and Construction of Probiotic Strains with Enhanced Protective Properties against Intestinal Disorders

Within the scope of the DEPROHEALTH project, a range of wild-type strains of Lactobacillus were analysed for their ability to interact with the host immune system. While the studied isolates interacted in a strain-specific way with immune cells, they seemed to have little and non-discriminative effect on epithelial cells. However, they were shown to facilitate the cross-talk between intestinal and immune cells. Prognostic value of PCR, IL-6 and IL-10 serum levels in determining postoperative complications after geriatric surgery in diabetic patients

Background The onset of postoperative septic complications has been associated to serum levels of interleukin (IL) IL-6 and IL-10. [1,2]. We have extrapolated a diabetic group from a previous study to evaluate pre and postoperative profiles of some inflammatory markers (IL-6 , IL-10 and CRP). We related the data obtained to the onset of postoperative complications. Diabetic patients have been selected because of their high rate of post-operative complications, especially surgical wound infection.

We have previously shown that human IL-10-treated dendritic cells (DC) induce an antigen-specific anergy in CD4+ T lymphocytes. These anergic T cells are characterized by an inhibited proliferation, a reduced production of IL-2, and additionally display antigen-specific suppressor activity. In this study we investigated the mechanisms underlying the anergic state and regulatory function of these T cells. We did not observe enhanced rates of programmed cell death of anergic CD4+ suppressor T cells compared to T cells stimulated with mature DC.
