Cordycepin is an immunoregulatory active ingredient of Cordyceps sinensis.

2008

We have reported that cordycepin, an adenosine derivative from the fungus Cordyceps, increased interleukin (IL)-10 expression, decreased IL-2 expression and suppressed T lymphocyte activity. In the present study, we further characterized the regulatory effects of cordycepin on human immune cells. Moreover, a traditional Chinese drug, Cordyceps sinensis (CS) that contains cordycepin, was also investigated. Cytometric Bead Array (CBA) was used to determine the concentrations of IL-1beta, IL-2, IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12, TNF-alpha and IFN-gamma in culture of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). The results showed that both cordycepin and CS up-regulated IL-10, IL-1beta, IL-6,…

Serum VEGF and b-FGF profiles after tension-free or conventional hernioplasty.

2005

Angiogenesis is strongly influenced by vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and basic fibroblast growth factor (b-FGF), whose production is also regulated by interferon (IFN)-gamma and interleukin (IL)-10. The aim of this study was to evaluate the modifications of serum VEGF, b-FGF, IFN-gamma and IL-10 levels in patients with inguinal hernia undergoing hernioplasty with the Lichtenstein technique (LH) using polypropylene mesh or with Bassini open conventional inguinal hernia repair (BH). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Randomly, 16 patients underwent BH, and 16 were treated with the LH technique using polypropylene mesh. Blood samples were collected 24 h prior to surgery and then 6, 24, 48 and …

Impact of Heavy Polypropylene Mesh and Composite Light Polypropylene and Polyglactin 910 on the Inflammatory Response

2010

The aim of the study was to analyze the acute inflammatory response after implantation of a heavyweight mesh of polypropylene (PP) compared with a composite mesh of light PP and polyglactin 910 (PG) in patients undergoing inguinal hernioplasty. A total of 30 male patients with inguinal hernia were included in the study and divided into 2 groups (PP and PP-PG) according to the mesh used. Changes of leukocytes, cytokines, growth factors, and acute phase proteins were evaluated in the sera. Leukocytes and acute phase proteins were significantly increased postoperatively in both groups, and the values were slightly higher in the PP group. Cytokine levels were significantly increased postoperat…

Continuous therapy with transdermal nitroglycerin does not affect biomarkers of vascular inflammation and injury in healthy volunteers.

2009

Continuous exposure to nitroglycerin (GTN) results in development of tolerance and is associated with increased free radical production and abnormal endothelial function. Elevated plasma biomarkers of inflammation have been shown to be associated with endothelial dysfunction in most cardiovascular conditions. It remains unclear whether exposure to GTN is also associated with increased biomarkers of endothelial and vascular injury or vascular inflammation. In an investigator-blind study, a total of 28 healthy volunteers were randomized to continuous therapy with GTN (0.6 mg/h 24 h/day for 7 days) or no therapy. Venous blood was collected on day 0 and day 7. Plasma levels of markers such as …

LOW-DOSE INTERLEUKIN-2 INDUCES SYSTEMIC IMMUNE RESPONSES AGAINST HBsAg IN IMMUNODEFICIENT NON-RESPONDERS TO HEPATITIS B VACCINATION

1989

Abstract A metabolic monocyte defect appears to correlate with non-responsiveness to hepatitis B vaccine in many patients on haemodialysis. This defect prevents production of interleukin-2 during T-cell activation after antigen contact. Receptors for interleukin-2 are, however, expressed in greater numbers than in healthy subjects or uraemic responders to hepatitis B vaccination. In this study, ten uraemic patients, previous non-responders to vaccination against hepatitis B, were revaccinated with the same vaccine combined with one intramuscular injection (2·5 × 10 5 U) of natural human interleukin-2. Systemic production of antibodies against hepatitis B surface antigen was initiated in tho…

Increased plasma xanthine oxidase activity is related to nuclear factor kappa beta activation and inflammatory markers in familial combined hyperlipi…

2010

Abstract Background and aims Xanthine oxidase (XO) has been described as one of the major enzymes producing free radicals in blood. Oxidative stress and inflammatory processes have been implicated in the pathogenesis of endothelial dysfunction and the progression of atherosclerosis but until now, there is little data about the influence of vascular prooxidant systems and inflammation in familial combined hyperlipidemia (FCH). Our goal was to evaluate whether XO activity was altered in FCH and if it was related to the inflammatory process represented by NFkB, IL-6 and hsCRP, and assessing the correlation between XO activity and insulin resistance (IR). Method and results 40 Non-related subje…

Predominance of Th1-type T cells in synovial fluid of patients with Yersinia-induced reactive arthritis

1992

The pathogenetic mechanisms underlying the development of reactive arthritis and the functional capacities of synovial T cells specific for Yersinia enterocolitica are still unclear. In this study we have determined the cytokine secretion patterns of 24 CD4+ synovial fluid (SF)-derived T cell clones from 2 patients with Yersinia-induced reactive arthritis, 16 clones specific for different Yersinia antigens and 8 clones as controls. The clones specific for Yersinia antigens predominantly belong to the T helper cell 1 (Th1) subset with production of interferon (IFN)-gamma and interleukin (IL)-2, but no IL-4, whereas SF T cells not reactive with Yersinia antigens produce IL-2, IL-4 and IFN-gam…

Differentiation, phenotype, and function of interleukin-17-producing human Vγ9Vδ2 T cells.

2011

Abstract In healthy adults, the major peripheral blood γδ T-cell subset expresses the Vγ9Vδ2 TCR and displays pleiotropic features. Here we report that coculture of naive Vγ9Vδ2 T cells with phosphoantigens and a cocktail of cytokines (IL-1-β, TGF-β, IL-6, and IL-23), leads to selective expression of the transcription factor RORγt and polarization toward IL-17 production. IL-17+ Vγ9Vδ2 T cells express the chemokine receptor CCR6 and produce IL-17 but neither IL-22 nor IFN-γ; they have a predominant terminally differentiated (CD27−CD45RA+) phenotype and express granzyme B, TRAIL, FasL, and CD161. On antigen activation, IL-17+ Vγ9Vδ2 T cells rapidly induce CXCL8-mediated migration and phagocy…

Static magnetic fields generated by a 0.5T MRI unit affects in vitro expression of activation markers and interleukin release in human peripheral blo…

2001

To investigate the effects of the static magnetic field (SMF) generated by a 0.5 T superconducting MRI unit on in vitro activation marker expression and interleukin release in human peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) samples from healthy volunteers.PBMC samples were split into two groups: exposed and sham-exposed under isothermal conditions. PBMC were exposed for 2 h at 24 degrees C to the SMF of a 0.5 T superconducting MRI unit. Immediately after exposure, both samples were cultured for 24 h at 37 degrees C with or without mitogenic stimulation by phytohaemagglutinin (PHA). PBMC were examined for expression of CD25, CD69 and CD71 by immunofluorescence analysis and supernatants were a…
